Starting a build on my yj, mainly a resto build, its a 95 yj with 4" rc lift 1" extended bodymounts and 32s tj flares, 8.8 rear with ls. im about to swap out my exhausted 195k 4 banger for another, my question is whats the best setup to travel (say 50mph,65 tops) with a 1000lb pop up camper. I personally want to go back to 35s. but what gearing is the best for what i want and has anyone had any experience traveling in a yj pulling a popup with the legendary 4 banger? :beers:

With D44's you get a lot more than deeper gear choices. I would say yes. I have never heard anyone say "I wish I kept the stock axles instead of upgrading to D44's" ;)

Although I'd recommend 5.38's for 35's.

but see i recently swapped a ford8.8 , and i would rather not re swap the rear after dumping time and money on the rear

It will take 5.13's. The D30 won't.

5.38 for 35" tires, which likely means front/rear d44's.

You can drive with 5.13 and 35's (I guess it would be about the same as my 33's and 4.88), but add the camper and it will be a DOG. I would either go with either 4.88 and 31's, 5.13 (new front axle) and 33's, or 5.38 (both axles are changed) and 35's. Honestly speaking, my 33's have gotten me everywhere that my buddies' 35's take him, so I would go with the 33's.

From where your at I would do 4.88s and upgrade to 33's if you want bigger tires. I used to tow a 13' Scotty upright camper behind my 2.5 w/ 4.10s and 31's and I ran a lower gear than when I was solo, but I wouldn't used OD when towing anyway so it wasn't an issue for me, kept up with friends going down the highway. Now I drive an old campervan and tow the Jeep which I find more fun than towing w/ the Jeep but I also like to run the stupid trails when I wheel.

I pull a 13' Play-Mor upright camper with a 2.5L and AX5 and 33's and 4.88s. It runs 3000-3200 rpm at 60-65 in 4th gear. I would not go any bigger in tire size because of center of gravity with the pulling vehicle. Forget 5th gear when pulling a trailer, the gear is not really strong enough for the heavy loads.
