My Dad recently swapped out the Edelbrock muffler he's had on his old first gen. Explorer EB since about 1996. He replaced it with one of these new Flowmaster Super 50s:

I'm currently back East at his place and drove his old Explorer with the Flowmaster and that thing is way quiet with like zero interior resonance. Frankly, it's quieter than the Borla cat-back I have and the Dynomax cat-back I had before that. Only downside with it is it's aluminized steel, so how long it'll last is kind of up in the air. But the Super 50 definitely changes my impression of the Flowmaster product range.

You do realize the Explorer has A LOT more insulation then the Jeep. Not to mention, if you have a soft top, you basically have no sound insulation.
I'll never buy a Flowmaster. Mine lasted a year. Just long enough to be past the warranty. It broke at a weld. The aluminum paint cooks off relatively fast as well. If you drive it for a while you can wipe the paint off with a glove on.

I was thinking the same thing about the Exploder having more insulation. I think they sound too tinny/ricey on 4 cyl's, I dig my Magnaflow XL but honestly I wouldn't even mind something a tad quieter. I'm an old man when it comes to loud exhausts :wall:

Yeah, mine was loud but it didn't have the nice rumble like a V6 or V8. It just sounds loud and a bit high pitch, where you know it's not a V8.

Yes, but you must recall that the stainless steel Edelbrock RPM muffler, formerly on said Explorer, served as my frame of reference for this comment. Insulation or not, you definitely heard the Edelbrock droning/roaring in the Exploder's interior back in the day.
As for insulation on the first gens, sure there's the foam under-hood piece. But we've had the panels off all the doors to replace the power window gears and those doors are effectively just big metal cow bells with no insulation. Still, there's thicker shag carpeting, the headliner, underside spare and whatever underside coating that was on the thing. But I doubt it's any match for the low interior noise you might find in later model Explodes.
But all this is just me throwing my impressions out there -- Flowmaster appears to me to have a quiet "performance" product in their muffler lineup, quieter than the products I've tried from Borla, Edelbrock and Dynomax
Will its welds last, will the aluminized paint wipe off? Ask me again in a year or two. :wall:
