Post by: dirtybrown on October 04, 2010, 05:52:13 PM
hey new to forum hoping yall can help me out. so i have 95 yj just put a d30 i bought in my jeep it has tj shafts and an aussie locker. the axle worked fine in the other guys jeep cause i saw it. so. after i installed it i took it out for a spin with the transfer case shifter in 2wd i was getting power through the front driveshaft. took it off and any issue i had went away.  reached up and attempted to spin front output yoke of trnasfer case and got nothing makes me think im stuck in 4hi.

did you have the t-case in neutral when you tried to spin the front output yoke by any chance? apparently when in neutral it locks front and rear in the t-case, so only when in 2wd the front is disconnected

Well, your front driveshaft will rotate when in 2WD because of the TJ shafts and the locker which you can feel though the wheel a bit.  It will feel like it's in 4WD even though it's not.  There is some drag since the front output is connected to the chain and two sprockets even when it's not connected to the output shaft.

You might want to put the Jeep on a lift or disconnect the front driveshaft and put the rear on stands and see if it's turning.

How do you know it was sending power through the front driveshaft while in 2wd?

the reason i think it was sending power when the driveshaft was connected is that it would pulll hard left and also make it extremely hard to turn right on pavement but when the driveshaft was removed its like i am driving a stock jeep so being that there are no vibs and the driveshaft is balanced im trying to figure out what in the transfer case could be messed up

Does it have a body lift?  Sometimes these cause the lever not to go as far as it should.

nope no body lift and i got underneath and pushed on the shift lever and its as far back as i can push i also feel it shifting in all positions its just when i shift into 2wd the shifter is in the right spot and it feels like it shifted it just doesnt go to 2wd feels like it stays in 4h

I had this when my drivetrain shifted to the left: my engine mount broke off and the tranny mount sheered off thus my complete drive train got about 5 degrees off. The shiftstick could not reach the end point and in my case: I got stuck in 4hi.

so look for a broken motor mount?

In my case that but maybe more important: broken tranny mount and stabeliser.
It might be a long shot but doesnt cost a thing.
(in my case this was the gremlin causing lot's of problems, see other topics of mine)
