My 91 yj had terrible droning at highway speed(didn't sound that great at lower speeds either) when I bought it due to a dynomax muffler.
I ripped it off and put a stainless walker quiet flow on it(supposed to be oem sound) and it quieted things down tremendously. I however still have some drone(in the drivers seat only) at 60mph +, its fine below that.
I know my cat isn't that great of shape so I was thinking of replacing it with a long resonator before the muffler.
YES, I know its illegal, don't get on your
I live in a non test/inspection state, and use it in tall grass that is pretty dry sometimes and wish to remove the cat fire hazard.
Does anyone have any experience with stainless high quality resonators that have good packing, not cheap fiberglass?
Any recommendations?
I mainly want to lower the sound 1 or 2 dbs, 3 would be great.

i think a new cat will be more quiet than any resonator and probably same price.

I doubt the cat is any more of a fire hazard than the rest of the exhaust.

Someone from another forum did a Straight Pipe + Resonator and it works great for him...
he's looking to be quiet not free flow

Honestly, a high-flow cat will get rid of the resonance better then a resonator/cherrybomb and you'll be legal on top of it.

I got a resonator tip for my Sport Trac after the wife complained about the noise of the Gibson cat-back. It made it a little quieter but not much.

What brand of tip did you use johnny?

Dunno. Generic crap from Auto Zone for $25. Looks kinda like a glasspack on the inside. Path of least resistance plus it's chrome and took about 5 minutes to install.

a high flow cat (something like a magnaflow) could tone down an exhaust? if that's true then i could use one. my cat is pretty beat and my exhaust could spare to lose a few decibels.

Yes, the cat will quiet down the exhaust a lot and will definitely be quieter then a cherry bomb and a muffler.

is your cat gutted? cause if it is that expansion in the were the guts used to be.. putting a strait pipe in it will make a big diff that way but a resonator or cat would be best to get rid of the noise!!
