Title: What do you guys think?
Post by: N8whitie on October 24, 2010, 06:09:33 PM
I saw this axle here and was wondering what you guys think? Would a Dana 60 be too much axle for my 2.5? I still have my plans for the 8.8 in the rear and 44 up front that you guys had previously suggested but saw this for 50 bucks. I have seen 2.5's with 60's in pics online but never really heard how they worked out.

Thanks for any input. - Nate

55" WMS is a bit narrow.  Good for a CJ not so good for a YJ.  The D60 is a HUGE housing and unless you have a minimum of 35's you'll be catching it on everything.  it's also missing a lot so you'll have to buy new drums and such for it as well as regear it.

Still, you could make it work but it won't be cheap.  Probably end up costing more then a complete D60.

OK Thanks. I somehow missed the length. I'm looking for about a 60' wm to wms... I think. What length do you run? What are the odds of us finding a good 8.8 whe we go to the junkyard? Speaking of the junkyard, when do you want to go? I can do it this coming weekend if you want. I figure that I'm going to have to dump money into whatever axle I get with new gears, shafts, lockers and adapting it to my Jeep so I'm prepred for that. I'm planning on starting with the rear unless I come across a good D44 first.

Jeffy I'd take another look at the length:
Quote
drum to drum its 55'' lug end to lug end 63''
I'm guessing that drum to drum measurement is between the backing plates, in order for the lug ends to be 63" apart.  Perfect width for a Wrangler of moderate height (33"-35").  Can't beat the price, looks like it may only need some brake work, which so many donor axles do.

Well, he'd want to call and ask.  See if there's a BOM to be sure of everything.  I'd guess it's from a J10 then...  The brakes look like 11"x2" which aren't that good as 10x2.5".  The 31 splines are 1.30" like the Dana 44.  So other then the housing, everything will need to be replaced.  That's a lot of money to have a shop do the work.  If he was building it himself then it would be an OK deal depending on what the axle came from.

Might be better to watch POR for someone parting out some pre-built axles.

POR = Pirate's of the Rubicon.  It's a Bay Area (South Bay) 4x4 Club but they have a huge forum with people from all over.
