Title: ax15
Post by: N8whitie on October 25, 2010, 04:58:19 PM
Just saw an AX15 on Craigslist for 250. What would I have to do to fit it in my 95 YJ 2.5? Is it even worth it?

You would need a Dodge Dakoda 2.5L Bell housing.

that + t-case input shaft and a camaro 4 cyl clutch disk. You also need a longer clutch slave pushrod.

Make sure the bell you get is fro a 96 or newer 2.5 equiped dakota cause the 95 and older 2.5s are actualy a chrysler common block, while our 2.5s are amc. they are two totaly differnt blocks. Make sure the ax-15 is already set up for a external slave if not you will have to buy a new input shaft bearing retainer. On my 95 i didnt need a longer push rod but yours may be different. I did have to get a adapter pilot from advance adapters but it was less than 20 bucks. and i had to lengthen my fron drive shaft since the swap moved the transfercase back 2 inchs. the 4.0 jeeds had the motor moved two inches further foward to compensate for this, you could go that route but i found it easier to lenghten the fron drive shaft.

the dakota bellhousing i got was about 1'' deeper, that's why I ended up with the longer pushrod.

Mine was to, but i guess i just got lucky. In my last post i forgot to mention that i got my t-case input from a durango i found a case at the local pull apart some one had already tried to take apart but failed to get apart and took it out of there. I wish all t-cases were as easy to get apart and the 231 i had it swapped out in less that a half hour. By the way the reason you need to swap the input is the ax-5 has a 21 spline input and the ax-15 has a 23 spline input.

Wow, thanks guy. Sounds like a really involved project. Don't get me wrong, I love involved projects but with all the parts you have to swap out it seems that alot can go wrong down the road. Anybody have any problems? Jeffy also suggested an NV3550... which seem harder to find, will these bolt in easier? I've looked around and believe it or not these topics are pretty far and few between on forums or write-ups.

the hardest part is finding the bell and swapping the input the rest is just like when you replace the clutch the nv3550 will require the same parts if i remember right so it would be just as involved. plus the 3550 cost a heck of alot more when you find one.

the pilot bearing is different i think on the 3550 (or i could be wrong) - that's what i got and i used an Advance Adapters pilot bearing for (I'm not sure) a 4500 transmission - if that's what you used also it means they're the same. the rear output shaft on the 3550 has it's own seal, i believe the ax15 seals on the input of the t-case just like the ax-5 (but again this is from what i remember when i looked for parts for this swap).

I have some pictures and a little writeup on the swap in the Member's projects in my drivetrain upgrades thread if you want to have a look.

I sure hope my '95 YJ (TJ fan belt, TJ rear hinges, TJ hood/window bumpers) is like that!

Where have you seen this?  Every TJ AX5 I've seen is 21spline.  Even my '95 YJ was 21spline, and it's part TJ, even the 231 internals are a crossbreed between YJ and TJ.

never heard of 23 spline AX-5 either, i think the late TJs had the same t-case between 4 and 6 cyl but they didn't have the AX5 anymore.

A '94 could have been made as early as '93.  A 95.5 could be made as late as '96.

My 94 has it. Thats why I brought it up. I was told by a dealer mechanic that Chrysler ran out of AX5 transmissions
in 94 and the later orders had the 23,, what can I say mine is the Bast*** version in more ways than that...
I know that they had a lot of trouble replacing my transmission when it blew up under warranty, took them 2 weeks to get
the parts.

First I've ever heard of one, and I rebuild a LOT of 231's.

I believe it was a toyota or Mazda part but since mine is working (knock on wood) I'm not going to worry too much right now..... LOL

How hard is it to find an AX15 throwout bearing for this swap? From what i've heard its different from the AX5 and NV3550 one.

I'm pretty sure they are the same (that's what i remember) but I'll check and report back shortly

EDIT:

same P/N all the way to 2006 (for the 4.0L) as the one for the AX5
Timken Part # 614093  Ball Bearing; Bore=1.435", Outer Diameter=3", Width=2.008"

this is for external slave AX5
