I was being obnoxious one day and took an old glass pack style muffler and welded it in place of my dented/rusted out/seam split factory muffler. I think I'm ready to hear my stereo again while highway driving. I know there isn't anything that's going to give it a v8 rumble but what do you guys like for your 4 cyls that isn't too obnoxious but not sissy either? :)

Well, I'd get one that's pretty quiet at lower speeds. (That leaves out Flowmaster.) I always recommend Borla but they are pricey. (Although the warranty pays for itself the first time you damage the exhaust.)
Banks, Magnaflow, Gibson are supposed to be decent.

I started with a Dynomax Cat-Back system for my 4cyl which, I believe, is sold for use on both the 4.0 and 2.5. The exhaust was aluminized and mandrel bent, which was good. However, it seemed particularly loud (not Flowmaster loud, but pretty loud) and torque was a little off.
Ultimately, after a couple of years, I had to replace the exhaust and cat. So, I decided to move to a Borla cat-back. The Borla muffler is straight-through, but does not sound as loud as the Dynomax (which with the Super Turbo design is not straight-through). Also, mandrel-bent stainless steel which is nice for durability. Of course, if you bash it on some rocks, you are going to pay dearly for a replacement.
Anyway, Borla mufflers are good.
Also, I don't have a backseat in my 4 cyl, so I have an open floor in the back. What I did was to install a doubled-over layer square of some of that thick Dynomat sound proofing in the space where the seat formerly was. This stuff works great to kill some of the remaining interior noise when you are running an aftermarket exhaust. Highly recommended if you have a good sound system whose "lows" you want to hear over the exhaust.

To be honest with ya, my plain old turbo muffler sounds pretty good. Not too loud and still doesn't sounds like a ricer.

I got an OEM replacement from the 'zone and it sounds pretty good, better than my old Flowmaster 50DF.

I'm running Gibson, and I like the sound of it. If I have the moeny, I would have gotten their stainless steel version, but I'm happy with what I have so far.
Without installing, or hearing the other brands... I'll go with what I know.

i got the super-turbo from autozone and sounds good, just a tad louder than stock. has kinda a deep sound for a 4cyl. i know the engine feels more powerful than when i got it but i did some other minor deals as well. best part it was 20 bucks.

I had a borla on my 4cyl and it sounded pretty sweet. When my heep turned into a trail only rig I removed the cat and installed a glass pack where it would be procted by the skid plate. I have the Borla sitting the gerage. Make an offer. It has a couple little dents and it no longer reaches out from under the body of a jeep. I cut it down so the tip would not get smashed. It just needs 12" extra tubing to reach out from under the bumper.

I love my Cherrybomb. It does not sound "ricey" IMHO. I paid under $35 for the muffler + clamps & installed it myself. It gets pretty loud around 3,000 RPM.

You might want to try what i have. No cat (yeah i know) then a glasspack and backing that up with a dynomax super turbo. Sounds like a dumb idea but the sound is very deep for a 4Bagger. It probably has a lot to do with there not being a cat or the fact there is no tailpipe.

i have a gibson and it sounds very good, its got a full rumble at low rpm then it gets quieter as it goes up. Downpoint is after 1 year its allready got a thin thin layer of rust in some areas. Have i had the money i would have gone alluminium from the headers down

everybody seems to be forgetting one thing. Everybody's exhaust sounds different depending on what else you got going. I had about 10 different combos up until now and every change in the motor changes the tone. First you need to know what else os done to your jeep. Header? Converter? Oversized downpipe? Motor work? I had a dyno super before and in stock form it sounded great and then I ripped out the cat and it sounded ok. Then I put the header and downpipe on and it sounded like crap. Now with the motor I built I run borla header, borla downpipe, 2.5 pipe(no converter), into flowmaster delta 40 , and A crappy 2.25 tailpipe and that is the final combp that sounds good for me but is probably too loud for most. My point is you have to find someone with the same setup as you then compare because what sounds good on some may sound like crap on others.

I've got no cat and an OEM replacement muffler from the 'Zone, and it's very deep when at partial throttle. Deepest tone I've heard and not too loud, must be a 'no cat' thing.

I got a flowmaster 40 series. I hate it. I had one on my yj and replaced it with a cheap "turbo" muffler style. It was way nicer, with a better torque range. Only reason i have the 40 is i got it free from a friend that has a shop. Its loud as hell.

The muff on my 1989 2.5 has a inlet of 2 1/4" and a outlet of 2 1/4". What size yours is would only be a guess. Get your hands on a set of calipers and measure the dia. of your muff's inlet and outlet,
