I am about to replace my 4 banger spark plugs. Should I replace the wires with it? What do you recommend?

replace everything: spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor.

Do the plugs look bad? What brands do you recommend?

I seem to have the best luck with standard NGK plugs.
Platinum's special electrodes etc none gave me very good service.
I usually have to do mine every 18 to 29K in my YJ...
I use the NAPA Cap and rotor (Brass electrodes)
and I have had pretty good luck with the basic taylor wires.
The stock ignition seems plenty adequate for a daily driver and
my engine is pumped up a bit so far so good.

I use regular old Autolites but mine are gap'ed at .065" which is .030" over. But then I'm using a PD Ignition setup. Platinum's don't usually work too well in Jeeps. I've heard good things about the Copper "Truck" plugs though. Haven't tried them myself though.

replace them, they don't look great. NGK my preference also, not sure which ones for '01 TJ but get them out of the catalog. Plain ones, no fancy stuff unless you want to go to Denso Iridium which i heard they're the best out there but pricey (never used them personally though).

Yes, but I have a YJ. Is it the same engine?

The larger displacement 4 bangers seem to have similar traits.
My 2.5 in the YJ ran well on NGK stock and even withthe bumped
compression, cam, etc it seems to like them fine, As Jeffy
mentioned the Autolights are also very good in this type of motor.
I've found the lugging in wheeling seems to fry the platinum and
fancy electrode plugs, at least that my theory...
I also read an article by the engineer that does the Porsche ignition
program and he claimed that US fuel actually has several additives
that react badly with the platinum alloy in some plugs.
I tried Bosche Platinums and only got about 12Kout of them before
they started mis-firing. Interestingly my wifes 1.8 liter BMW 4 cylinder
thats a 95 came out right in the middle of the platinum plug fad and
BMW wont use them they used NGK stock in this car.
Myth and legend.... :)

If not you're running anything fancy then just run the same plugs you have. (They look like Auto-lites). You can play around with the gap if you want as well. Maybe try going to .040". For wires, you can use stock, or you can use performance wires, it's up to you. The performance wires are nice BUT you would wnat a performance coil as well. If you want a complete kit then I'd check out Performance Distributors FireWire kit with the Scremn' Demon coil. You get everything you need except spark plugs. A new coil, wires, rotor and cap. You'll be able to gap your pligs to .065" then.

From the color of the plugs the engine is running fine so there is really no reason not to use the same ones unless you've been having problems.. Like I said before, I run Autolites. If you want OE then those are Champions but there really is no difference. I've run Champions, Bosch and Autolites. if you want to go fancy then try some Champion Truck Plugs. Just stay away from the Platinum's...

Actually, there is one platinum plug that has worked. I forgot about it when I was switching over to the PD system. Autolite Double Platinum's. When I switch plugs I'll probably go with NGK Iridium, I think.

Generally, they show lackluster performance and life. Although my double platinum's have done well. I've had Bosch Platinum's and they didn't really do anything.

I think that only applies to systems with distributors, but every Jeep after 2000 has a DIS (Distributorless Ingnition System) and the double platinum plugs tend to last longer then copper plugs do because a DIS sends the spark more often..just make sure you get DOUBLE platinum. You can go with copper too but they will wear out quicker

I'm pretty sure that applies to the 4.0L engines. I can't see how the spark can be send to the plug more often unless it's a wasted spark system, i don't think that's the case with the Chrysler PCM in question (but can't tell you first hand).

Jeeps are just not high strung enough to be that sensitive to plugs,
Autolight or NGK (You can go Platinum if you have a burning desire to spend money)
But IN the jeeps I know of the platinums have NOT lasted well.
Despite being a long time Bosche plug user I don't use them in my jeep,
they simply did not last as long and for some reason I eat plug wires with them...(No clue why)
I suspect they are slightly higher resistance than the NGK's... But no proof..

DIS was only used in the 4.0L. The reason they went with the double platinum is because the DIS is a high-amp system. I believe they have 3 coils/ballasts, in which each pair share one coil. The 2.5L does not have this.
I'm not sure if the DIS sends multiple sparks or not though. I know the MSD ignition does. This is to help scavenge more power with more complete burn. Although, you can do the same by increasing the spark plug gap and having a longer arc with an aftermarket coil.

Also most CDI systems only multi spark to 3000 or 3500 RPM after that its one spark...

I've had nothing but good experiences with Bosch single platinums in my 2000 since I swapped out the original plugs at 12k miles... over 132k now and no complaints. The only plugs I've ever had a bad experience with over the past 18 years I've been driving has been with NGK - picked up a set since they were supposedly the hot thing going at the time, two of them went completely dead in a month, haven't touched 'em since.

Its all in the luck and which plug if ya ask me....
I've tried 3 different versions of the platinums in my 94 and none of them made 12K...
ON the other hand the NGK copper core standards last me about 45K a set.
I ran Platinums in a Toyota and same issues, but they worked great in my old
Porsche when running regular gas, when running unleaded they toasted quickly...
I wonder if its the crappy gas in oregon? Lots of alcohol and additives...

I have beening runnig NGKs V Groove on mine for 8 to 9 years now. No not the same ones. But in the past I have used bosch platniums with the 2 and the 4 pronger thinga migige, I also used regular champion copper, O a nightmare with E3s almost blew up my motor, stay away from those. Eiether way I always keep coming back to the NGK V Groove. They work best for me. I do run a accel coil which is rated at 48,000 volts, I also run accel 8mm wires. I found my sweet spot with the plugs gapped at .037. Remember as they burn or wear out the gap gets bigger. I do pulled them out about every 4 months or so, clean them and regap for optimum performance.
