Title: Relay question
Post by: jfrabat on December 03, 2010, 09:51:49 AM
So one of the KC lights' relayed has died on me (probably had something to do with the fact that it was under water last time I wheeled!), and I cannot get an exact match; I was wondering if i used a 12V one instead of a 14V one if it would work (it's a Bosch, not a cheap chinese one)?

12v is fine, match the amps though.

14V is an odd rating.  Either match the rating or go higher.  Usually Bosch/Tyco relays are 30A, 30/40a or 40A.  Also if your harness uses pin 87 and 87a you will need to use a 5-pin relay and not a 4-pin.

the 5 pin is for normally closed (when not activated) - he doesn't need that for the lights.

The original was a 14V 40A; I ended up using a 12V 30A, but since I also changed the bulbs from 100W to 55W, I should be good to go (55W/12V=4.58A, times 2, it should be a bit under 10A of actual (theoretical) draw; leaves 20A of cushion!).
