I was in China a few weeks ago and, trust me, none of those rules are practiced or enforced on the road. Those people drive like maniacs! It was so scary riding around that the three of us would flip a coin or draw straws to see who'd have to ride shotgun. I took a photo (but can't get it to load here) of us doing 90 kph down the four lane highway........ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD!!!!!

Yup, that looks familiar! And yes, the air looks that bad all the time. Even in the countryside it was horribly smoggy.
