Title: Xrc8 winch issue
Post by: 95yj0645 on January 24, 2011, 09:25:50 PM
I have a smittybilt xrc8 winch and it isnt working .. its seriously been used twice since I bought it so its brand new .. currently temps are very cold and we have snow .. a guy slid off the road so i was going to winch him out but once I plugged in the controller it was no go .. did i fry my switch?when i push up to spool out the red light blinks for a split second then goes off with a flash of green.. when i push down to spool in the green light flicks on for a second then off with a flash of red .. you DO NOT hear the solenoid click on either time. i took an awesome detailed vid on my ipod but it wont load to youtube it would make this so much easier to explain

Hmm, there really isn't much to a winch.  Although if it was a solenoid, then you should still have one direction working normally.  I'd suspect the controller.  I'd need to see a schematic to se able to see what the controller actually does though.  Blinky lights seems weird.

Found this:  http://www.outhouseoffroad.com/tech.html

You can use it to make a jumper to bypass the controller and see if the winch works.  it's also a good idea to have a dash controller as well as people are always losing the controllers.

That link doesn't work.  It's also the mobile link.  What's your user name?  I tried xl_blazer but it's not showing anything.

Hmm, after looking at some of the pictures, I suspect it's the solenoid.  I guess they went cheap and instead of using 4 robust yet simple solenoids they went with some small controller.  Probably need to call Smittybilt or whoever owns them now and have them send a replacement or else you could build a standard solenoid pack.
