I keep hearing that this is not a good idea. Some of the people I have talked to say its all in how you drive it. IDK what to go by.
I have a 90 yj and looking to change out the 2.5. I have a D35 rear and a D30 front with 4:88 gears. I do not do any heavy duty off roading, mostly Highway and the average trails. I guess what Im trying to say is will it be a bad idea if I dont do any rock crawling or major mudding?
What motor would be decent?

so your going v8?
-
Im not sure yet. I had a cherokee with the 4.0 5 spd 4x4 and loved it, but I see that the v8 has been done alot and seems to be a little easier.
Im just lost on what to do. I drive an hr and a half to work every third day and love to drive down to the coast and ride along the beach but The hills in Tallahassee are not helping

you can do a v8 with the axles and it will mater a lot how you drive !!! if your just driving to work it would be ok but I would be worried about torquing the axles under loads
personally I would go to min d44's or equivalent minimum..
I want d44's for my 4cld even!! lol

I broke both rear shafts at once with the 2.5L so I wouldn't trust it with a V8.
Ford 8.8 or 9 inch or D44 are safe bets.

ok if I do a D44 with the same 4:88 305 ax15, do I leave the front axel the same and does that sound like a decent set up?

The ring gear on the D30 is fairly small. It's pretty tough for it's size, but I'm not sure how long it would live with a V8. You could see what happens and upgrade as needed. It would depend on how you drive it for sure. But the D35 has to go for sure IMO.

While the 35 isn't anywhere near as bad as most people make it out to be the 35 will be under sized with 4.88s and a v-8.
what size tires are you running? I would look into dropping the 4.88s for 4.10s w/ going v-8 I think you'll find that 4.88s are tooo much gear for what you need and you'll be screaming that 8 unless your running 38's or bigger, then you should be looking at much bigger tires anyway.

Your '90 d35 should be the non c-clip design and is marginally stronger than it's c-clip replacement. I put a built 350 in my '88 YJ and the non c-clip d35 held up pretty well with light wheelin and 33" MT's.
Go for it, and keep your eyes open for stronger axles, like a Waggy d44 front and Isuzu Rodeo rear d44.

they switched form non c-clip to c-clip midway through the 1990 model year.. aka my 1990 yj has the c-clip version so you will need to check to see which version you have.

OK! well scratch that idea for now lol. I just had two other options open up.
I found a 95 cherokee with 4.0 5spd 4x4 for cheap but someone was trying to tell me about an inertia ring. Has anyone done this with a 90 2.5 and how will this help on the highway speeds?
