1989 Wrangler 2.5L 4 banger, thorttle body injection (1 injector, no fuel rail)
new problem.. after running for a minute or less the injector in my throttle body stops straying fuel.
i have replaced the fuel pump, strainer, and gasket for the top of the tank where the assembly seals and it still does it.
fuel sprops spraying and it dies. after it dies i try to crank it again and no fuel sprays. after a few times fuel starts spraying again and it cranks and runs for another minute or less. thought maybe fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator was bad so i replaced the pump.... regulator will be in stock tomorrow morning @ 9am for me.... how hard is this to install?
the fuel filter was almost brand new but i removed it and replaced it with a piece of hose just to see what happened and it still acted exactly the same. filter is now reinstalled.
has anyone ever had this problem before?
-Erik <---- confused
-
So what happened to the other problem?
-
it still exists......
but i can't really diagnose that problem now that i cxan't keep the jeep running more than 30-45 seconds.
thinking this problem might be fuel pump relay... maybe it's heating up and creating an open? i dunno....
would the crank position sensor cause either of these problems possibly?
-
Yes the CPS could cause this issue.
-
going to replace that now....
i'll post the results..
-Erik <--- hopes that fixes it... although i'll be pissed nobody mentioned that on other forums
-
replaced cps... existing one only had one bolt holding it in so when i put the new one in with 1 bolt (planned to get another bolt once i got the problem resolved) the flywheel or whatever it is that triggers the sensor rubbed it a little... i quickly stopped trying to crank it and turned it so it was farthur away and wouldn't touch....
cranked the jeep and started to adjust how close the sensor was and it started to idle better... not perfect, but a lot better..... (i've got a bad idle problem, see my other thread about that)
well as i was about to tighten that bolt that held on the sensor better the jeep died as it's been doing the whole time.
now i can't get it to crank again. might be the sensor, i'm going to reinstall my old one to see but i looked at the new sensor and the tip wasn't even scratched so the contact that it made was extremely minimal.
question is... when i turn the key from off to on i should hear the fuel pump cycle on and off. it doesn't. i have a new relay and new pump. what are the requirements for the fuel pump relay to get a 12v signal so it will power the pump? i'm definatly narrowing this down but it's costing me rediculous amounts of money as i replace parts.
so... what does it take for the relay to get 12v signal to power on the pump? i'm going to start tracing that...... when i turn the key to ON i get the normal seatbelt light and the gauges come on..... so i don't think it's my ignition but i could be wrong....

well i put fuel into the throttle body and now i'm starting to think that i'm not getting any fuel or spark....
computer?
or is there something else i can check?

I don't have any FSM's for the pre 91's. I suggest picking up a cheap hayes or else check on ebay for a FSM. It will help you ID stuff.
-
unfortunatly autozone and advance were sold out of the consumer version of the fsm....
i might splurge and spend the money for one from the dealer, assuming they can get it... they've had some problems getting me quite a few parts that have been doscontinued but i don't think this will be one of them....
thanks

uh oh
computer.... hopefully my only problem... i'd hate to try a new one..
does anyone know where i can buy one in the next day or so? used? refurb'd? etc
-Erik <--- i've fixed all wiring issues so far as i know thus far
-
Try a salvage yard or ebay. Collin Brothers or other Jeep only salvage yards might have them too.
-
two on eBay but after emailing both sellers they both said the computers came out of multiport 4 bangers, not throttle body injected.
i'll check out collin brothers tomorrow if the two i've found fail to come through.
Thanks... i'm always looking for a good jeep junkyard.....

Try this site: http://car-part.com/.

yea they didn't have anything near me... that was the first place i checked.
-Erik <--- loves that website

It doesn't have to be close. Many places will ship the parts. It's how a lot of people got their 4.0L TB's in the early days.

If I remember correctly, it is a "throttle position relay"
and it is the same part number as the fuel pump relay.
Found out today, the yellow caped plug, larger one just
above the relays, is where the code reader plugs in.
On my 89 yj anyway.

thanks guys....
now i'm just waiting for my new computer to arrive and we'll see if she runs again

i do have an extra computer but its for a 95, sorry.
