Ok so I am sick of replacing a head unit a year since 06. So I picked up a sony cdx-m30 for a little extra coin. Have people had better luck with a marine unit? I Was thinking of tining a splash guard of some sort in the rear to help protect her but still let her breathe. Any input or ideas?

I have an old Alpine that has had rain water poured into the back of it a few times. Still works. I've had this since 1994.
A splash guard would work too. You'd probably want one on the top to prevent water from coming into the case.
I need to get a new head unit as I want one with an AUX and a USB/iPod controller. I wish I could find an inexpensive head unit that was only a media controller with no CD.

I had similar issues, I decided to get one of the center consoles that house the head unit, stopped me from having to replace the head unit every 6 months, been working for 4 years now.
As a note my Jeep hasn't had more than the safari top on it in 5 years.

The problem with doing that is the CD stabilization is designed for up and down movement. So CD's tend to skip more. Not a big deal with MP3's though. 2nd person to say old alpine still worked lol
Maybe I should sell mine to help pay for the upgrade!

My Panasonic almost never skips even when wheeling.

always had alpines and the only reason I would ever upgrade it was to adapt to new technology!!!!
I upgraded to a new Alpine with usb so I don't have to use cd's anymore.

Hmm, I've had a Pioneer Pull-Out before my Alpine. I went with the Alpine because at the time it was the stereo installers were using for boats. Not cruisers but speed boats that do take a beating.
These day's CD is pretty much dead and with USB/iPod/AUX you don't have to even worry about skipping. I think my next stereo will be a Pioneer. Alpine's tend to be more expensive and you have to buy adapters to get it fully featured. A lot better value. Even the Kenwoods have more features. Not all of Alpine's units have built-in iPod controllers. Although if all you're looking for is a CD player then you can probably save a few as the technology hasn't change much and has started the downward spin to cheaper quality and components to lower mfg. cost.

I saw that Alpine added a new head unit to their lineup recently. I kinda like it since it's not too different looking then my current one. Just adds USB/iPod controller built in and AUX. Although it does cost $30 more then the Pioneer I was looking at. Pretty basic looking which is what I want. I hate the looks of some of the new head units with the shiny black plastic and flowing lines.

My Pioneer has been in my Jeep for 4 yrs with no problems. I do want to upgrade to one with an ipod usb port thou. I like quadratecs plug and play they sell not a bad deal for $109-189 depending on features you want.

I've always like my alpines I have them in both of my jeeps. In my yj I have a marine one with ipod n aux input it works great in my xj I have a older alpine with built in ipod controls I do play more cds then use my ipod it does great on the unpaved roads around my house. My buddy just got a radio the fit him well since he only uses his ipod the face opens up and you put the ipod in like a cd n close it and it still has an aux input. That radio is for the people that don't do cds anymore

this is one one I picked up. no ipod compatibility but I figured usb is lots and better in most ways then ipod. no cables laying around also don't need a ipod and usb sticks are loads cheaper then ipods not to mention if you need or want to run a ipod or any mp3 style player it has input on the front of the deck anyway and I carry that cable around to but it's still new in the package lol

Unless they have changed in recent years (as in the past year and a half), Sony marine units should come standard with a plastic splash protector on the back to avoid water coming in from above in the rear part of the unit.

I also got a tuffy stereo security console for my yj it works great keeps stuff dry and protected from theft.. I have my factory cassette deck player in my dash looks complete stock and un-interesting to theifs lol

Has anyone here used the waterproof amp to run an ipod type system. I have had it with tunes issues and sick of replacing crap. Basically a 100w ppyle waterproof amp i will run to my 6x9s aand control volume directly on ipod. Anybody done this have good ideas for mounting areas . Any and all input greatly appreciated...

Chicago radio sucks as it is and also looking into an xm walkman type device that I would plug into headphone jack and the waterproof amp would push through my 6x9s. Anybody have any advice on these type devices...what to stay away from???

JP magazine did an article a while back in which they just put a headphone jack on the dash, and ran it into a marine amp and to a pair of speakers. They used an iPod, but I would go with something that does not use a hard drive (solid state memory will not be affected by bumps and such). I know Sony makes a splash proof walkman that will take rain with no problems, and others have units you can literally submerge, so you can take your pick... As far as the amps go, they are NOT submergeable (sp?), so it's better to put them in a pleace where the are the least likely to get splashed (if you take out the stereo, and the amp is not that big, I see no reason why you cant put it where the head unit would go with a plastic plate to hide it.
