Very common sender problem, cheap to fix but the last one I put on from Autozone is reading way high which is just as bad.  I have tried searching for a quality sender but to no avail.  Most guys have suggested to go to a mechanical and I will as soon as a find a good/clean way to mount the gauge.

I had same problem with the one on my 97... Hooked up a mechanical gauge to make sure there wasn't anything wrong. Then got a new sending unit at O'Reilly's  reads the same as the mechanical one...

Idle should be around 40 while moving should be 60-ish.

Hey would someone please show a pick where you mounted your gauge?  I can not find a good spot for my TJ.

i've seen a TJ dual or triple (can't remember) gauge pod somewhere, i think but not sure it was autometer (or maybe was on ebay). if i find it again i'll let you know.

EDIT:

here's the autometer one:

I've had good luck with NAPA senders.

CLean threads and DONT wrap teflon tape all the way up, just a ring around the center so you still get metal to metal contact when threaded in.
