Title: Are all AX-5 trannies the same?
Post by: planman on April 27, 2011, 07:00:05 PM
On my recently acquired 98 TJ SE, 2nd gear kind of clunks or almost grinds when downshifting anything over about 10 mph.  I haven't changed the tranny fluid yet.  The TJ has 149k miles on it.

I can get a spare AX-5 from a 4 cyl 89 XJ and from a 4 cyl 97 XJ.  In fact, I could get a 97 XJ 2.5L, AX-5, and NP231 for around $600 if I want it.

I need to know if the AX-5 is the same between an XJ and a TJ in order to bolt right up.

There are slight differences.  The XJ/MJ transmissions will clock the front output of the transfer case lower than in a TJ or YJ.  There are also bellhousing and front bearing cover differences depending on internal or external clutch slave, but these parts are interchangeable.
