Title: erratic gas guage

yesterday on my drive to work my gas gauge went crazy, when slowing down itll drop down a half a tank then fluctuate crazy like a 1/4 tank each way regardless if i am speeding up, slowing down, or going around a corner.
so i guess my question is is can someone give me pointers on what to look for or how to check your sending unit without pulling it, i really dont wanna throw parts at it till its fixed

Loose connection someplace.  Could be at the tank or the dash.
