Title: What did you do with your Jeep today?
Post by: Jeffy on June 16, 2014, 08:40:25 PM
Here's what I did with the Jeep today.  Went to get the registration and emissions check done.  It's always a PITA getting the emissions done.  There's no regulation on cost so the tester can pretty much make up their own price.  You always feel shafy talking to them.  If you don't don't the special handshake you'll get screwed.  If you get the 'in' price they usually ask you not to share it with any walk-ins.

So anyway the place I usually go to closed their local shop.  I later found out they moved with no forwarding address on Yelp or their phone.  I had to find another place that wasn't going to screw me too bad.  Found another shop that had good reviews but was more expensive then the other place.  $30 for an EVAP test?  Really?  He cut me some slack and charged me $20 but still.  All they do is pressurize your gas tank with NO and check for leaks.  My tank was practically full so they didn't need to use that much gas anyway.  My usual place gets me out the door around $49.  I got out at $68.  I don't blame the shop though, they did a good job.  I just wish the state would regulate how much a shop can charge, again.

The Jeep passed easily though.

Oh then I spent an hour waiting to pay my registration.  Seems the other town's DMV's closed so they're all coming to this one.  It was pretty packed.

So, I pretty much wasted my day today.

Not doing much with the Jeep.  Finally got a job and am out of school.   So picked up a car cause its about 30 miles on way to work.

Got this guy  for $21,000 Diesel   Getting about 40 Mpg as long as I stay to freeways.  Little over 500 miles on it and still just a little under half a tank left to go.   Think it will end up with 700 miles on the 1st tank.

Not mine but looks just like it.

Just drove to work.   Had a code 22 recently and it turned out to be a loose connector.

have not touched my jeep since the middle of may. But i did finished rebuilding the body mounts and floors of the cj2a project ive been working on (just need to build transmission tunnel.... stretched the wheelbase a few inches and moved back the rear fenders for more leg room. not professional quality or pretty but should hold up. will go back and prep and paint body if the shake down run goes good in a few weeks.

Well, I did strip the temp sending unit on the rear of the block, if that counts.  Had to order to stripped bolt removers online to get it out, but they have not yet arrived.  once they do, it should be easy to swap the sensor in.  Tried starting the jeep and also got a code, but was late for work, so I simply changed cars.  I guess I left something unplugged yesterday when I was fiddling with the sending unit!

got the jeep running on Sunday afternoon after figuring out some electrical issues. still need to finish the transmission tunnel, bleed the rest of the air out of the clutch pedal and get the fenders on along with about 50 other tedious things but it ran and drove. confirmed our feer that the rear and front axles had different gear ratios so we are forced (for better or worse) to order 5.13 gears and lockers  :driving: :rtfm:

video proof https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NB6TL1RU8gE

has a long ways to go but a big emprovment from this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM00IRYphbE

also found that squeeling from my d44 is from the wiper seal going bad and not moving with the drive shaft correctly...

Since all the rain this evening was in the next county, I took off the doors, put down the top and took my grandsons out along the canal banks to spot 'gator. A couple of good eating size but nothing you'd want to waste a tag  on. Guys got a kick out of being able to look right down on them. Also saw several River Otters. A few of them were close to 4 feet long. (Remeind me not to go swimming any more.)
Sorry a few of you have hiccups with your rides. Right now mine's running like a top.

Well, my 2m radio was acting odd, so I had to look into it.  It had REALLY bad reception, and when I was transmitting, my handheld was opening the repeater, but the mobile unit was not.  Apparently, the wireless function of the antenna was not working properly, so I had to reconnect it for the radio to work right...   :wall:

I also tried replacing the oil pressure sending unit, but no luck on that...

Hopefully you didn't do damage to the TX circuit.

Hopefully you didn't do damage to the TX circuit.

I have checked, and so far, it is transmitting and receiving fine (hopefully, this will hold up).  But luckily, I did not transmit much at all, so it should be OK.

Now, back to the original subject, I FINALLY changed the Oil Pressure Sending Unit!  Now only the emergency brakes left to fix, and, for the first time since I have had the Jeep, I think, everything will be working as it should!  Wooohooo!!!

I changed the oil (first time in to many years to remember)  :puzzled: greased everything that had a zerk fitting. Put on a new Bestop safari bikini. Old one had a hole.
Getting ready for the Dusy  :doggy:

Got "Proto-jeep" registered and on the trails for the first time since 1988. only on the trails for about 3 hours before deciding to pack it up and head home with our list of improvements. Would have stayed longer but the FPR died and was starving the engine on hill climbs and our steer cylinder was more vulnerable than we anticipated... suspension worked better than expected for running worn out jk shocks. New shocks and a few tweeks and it will be ready for its first full trail weekend in 3 weeks :driving:.

Took the jeep to my buddy and he welded up my rear shock mount. Tore it off at Rausch Creek.
Plans for the rest of the week are basically for Saturday. Changing out diff fluids and seeing about replacing the seals on my rear locker. Maybe change out the front hubs. That should be it and she should be ready to wheel Sunday.

found out that the sputtering was more than just a FPR issue. Engine was in limp mode from lack of a knock sensor. Knew it was missing didn't know where it went, thats what you get when you take an engine from a junkyard vehicle and don't get it running until nearly 15 years later. The no name inline fuel pump was also too low of flow so it was still starving for fuel over 3 grand. got that fixed along with a host of other issues and Porto-jeep rev 2.3 is complete and ready to head to Texas next weekend. (rev 3.0 starts this winter, jeep projects are never complete)

if Texas isn't a complete disaster I'll make a proper build thread rather than these random posts.

I fixed Muffin's leaky exhaust manifold gasket, which fixed the stumble issue, and did a minor upgrade while I was at it too.

Finished up installing a Metalcloak armor and tube fender kit on my YJ..
Had to cover up some body damage form a tip-over a couple years ago..

If I can get self motivated I'll post up a build on it..

So far,, Jeep is quieter,, and of all things gets a little better mileage,
drives better at highway speed. ?? Its heavier but I think the arch
fenders don't grab air like the stock setup.. We'll see when I get a few more
miles on her and have all my crap loaded back in..

Well, I drove the Jeep the other day and got a weird vibration and it only got worse within 3 miles.  Thought it might have either been the driveshaft or the ball-joints.    Turns out the CV yoke was holding on with 3 bolts and all where very loose.  I lost one along the way.  Had to hunt for a 5/16-24x1-1/4" Grade 8.  That's like searching for unicorn teeth locally.  Ended up buying some from Fastenal.com.  Will have to wait a week a few days though.  It's shipping UPS ground.

While the Jeep was down I did change out the spark plugs.

Pulled the Windshield so I can replace it and the frame.  Mine was rusted and had a big dent from a rock thrown by a dump truck the windshield was starting to cloud.

My 1994 YJ just turned to 198,000 so I changed the oil.
It has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.  I hope I can keep it on the road for another 20 years.

Well, I worked on the Jeep.  Adjusted the door latch.  Turns out or more accurately, I didn't bother to adjust the latch stud when I went to full doors.  So my door was always about 1/4" from sitting flush.  That might be why I'm getting a leak.  I tried unbolting the stud like you're supposed to but it wasn't going to budge.  Turns out it's easier to buy a new  latch then to screw around with the old one.  I also noticed that the sheet metal was tearing.  So I ended up putting two washers under the bracket and I'll see if it leaks.  If it doesn't I'll buy a new bracket.  now I know why when people restore a car they sometimes leak the latch on.

Getting the Jeep ready for a 700 mile road trip.  Don't really have to do much other then throw all the gear into the back.

Also, we're supposed to have heavy rain this weekend.  I'm hoping the door seals for once.

Looks like my trip is actually 800 miles when it's all said and done.

On another note, we had heavy winds and rain.  Seems the Jeep is now water tight!  Leaky Jeepy no more leaky.

Well, the good news is that the door doesn't leak.  After heavy winds and rain, I got some drops from the top corner of the dash.  I think there's a hole somewhere in the windshield frame.

So I also found out what it's like to run out of gas in the jeep.  Power dropped off for an instant then it came back and all the power went away and the rpm dropped like a rock.  No warning at all.  Ended up 1.5 miles from where I was going to actually get gas.  With the high winds and many hills the jeep was getting worse the 12 mpg.  Then again I had it floored to keep the sped up. The other problem is that my gas gauge stopped working right before the trip.  I need to fix this when I get home. I have oil, coolant, brake fluid, grease gun, water, spare ignition set, spare injectors, spare TPS, all my tools...  Just no gas.

On the plus side, the jeep did 400 miles.  Side note LA Drivers suck.

The YJs do seem to be pretty reliable.

I had to replace a headlight adjusting screw because the plastic nut insert got stripped.   It seems the original screw is a strange size...could not find a nut that fit it.

I just got back from my road trip.  Put around 900 miles on the Jeep.  Ran out of gas a 246 miles and was planning on stopping at 248 to get gas.  I could see the station but it was a bit too dangerous to walk on the highway.  Called AAA and after 40 minutes someone called.  then I had to wait 40 more minutes for them to bring me 2Gal of gas.  Cost me $10 but I didn't really care at that point.  The Jeep got 12.4 mpg or there abouts.  I was running WOT and my fuel gauge stopped working and that was it.  Interesting enough there was only one cough and then everything started to die.  Then the dash lit up with a CEL.  Parked, started it up then drove 500 ft them died for good.  I guess EFI doesn't run too well on vapors like a carb does.

Once it was filled up, it ran fine.  Other then being underpowered it was okay at 65-70 mph. I think I'll be ordering some gas cans and seeing about fixing my gauge.  Also, I need to figure out where the leak I have is.  It was pouring when I left and really windy.  After a few minutes I had running water down the side of the dash.  I don't think I'll be figuring out how it's getting in for a while.  Worse come to worst, I'll replace the whole windshield frame.

Well, I took apart the gauge cluster and tested the gauges.  Unplugging the sender at the tank makes the gauge go to F.  I get something like 8-10 ohms from the sender at the same plug.  So, I guess I'm going to be dropping my tank tomorrow.  I'm hoping I can get the sending unit working.  Otherwise it's going to be an expensive fix.  $250 for a new sender/fuel pump.  They only come as a unit.  Wouldn't mind installing an TBI sender then running an external fuel pump but that's a lot of wok and would cost more.  PITA all around.

Hmm, I've seen some senders that are marked TBI with no pump on them.  Interesting.  Kinda wish the MPFI's were like that.
