The Mess Hall / Which Atlas Transfer Case
« Last post by Jeffy on August 08, 2020, 07:22:47 PM »
So, I've been thinking about this again.  The first thing I should mention is that I want to replace my AX-5 for an NV4500.  I'm thinking Atlas 2 (5:1) or Atlas 4.  Problem is which ratio should I go with.  The easy answer is the lowest available.  That would be 11.70:1.  Although with the NV4500, 8.16 might be a good choice.  That's 2.72:1 and 3.0:1.  The argument being that the ratios basically overlap each other.  With 11.7:1 though you could shift into 2nd and have 182.5:1..  I know a few members have compound low transfer case gears.  Think 11.7 would be two low?  I know Taco guy's stack Marlin crawlers.  I think the lowest I've seen is 580:1 on an employee's rig.  I'm currently only running 33's and don't really have plans on going larger.  The toughest trail I've done so far is the Rubicon and 2.72 just doesn't cut it.  I don't think 4:1 would either with the 2.5L.  Something in the low 100's would be optimal and anything above that is gravy.  So realistically, 5:1 would work.  143:1 (1st)/77:1 (2nd)/43:1  (3rd)

AX-5 x 5 x 5.13 = 101
NV4500 x 5 x 5.13 = 143
AX-5 x 8.16 x 5.13 = 164.9
AX-5 x 10.34 x 5.13 = 208.9
NV4500 x 8.16 x 5.13 = 234.8
AX-5 x 11.7 x 5.13 = 236
NV4500 x 10.34 x 5.13 = 297.6
NV4500 x 11.7 x 5.13 = 336

Hi everyone. I finally got an account after figuring out the process. I'm on the Facebook one. But there's more stuff on here I guess. The vehicles info is as follows: 1997 2.5 auto 2.5l red with 31x10.5 tires; almost all stock with 170 k. Needs a lot of work now what she runs and passed smog after sitting for a couple years because of electrical issues and lost keys; it's been in the family for 22 years (1999). Slowly fixing it up; got it to drive reliably since last year but it's gas mileage sucks. With 170k and a slipping transmission that has hard time going to reverse unless it's warmed up and hot outside or driving on the freeway for an extended period. Yeah I could use the help and advice that others have. I've been  reading about Jeeps for awhile and I can replace an alternator, starter but I've never taken apart an engine on the internal side except years ago in automotive class back in the 90s. Anyway I just wanted to introduce myself/old redena (name jeep) sorry for rambling on. 1 Jeep wave to another hi.

Just joined, just joined the 4 cylinder world in total. Picked up an 86 MJ this past Friday, TBI 2.5 5 speed w/ 4wd. Factory 4.10s i think. Long bed  It's got a 3 link up front and bigger leafs out back on 33s, so i'll be using it for weekend trips and for puttin around town. Can't do anything else, barely get's outta it's own way. ::)

I'd like to slowly fix it up and restore it a little as they are slowly getting harder to find, but definitely wanna give the abused 2.5 some of it's life back. :truck:

You might just consider doing a flat dash and redo all the gauges.

I like the one that retains the stock dash pad so you don't lose the stock defroster.

Too expensive for a toy that spends 98% of its time parked in the garage...  Besides, I would rather invest in a new soft top instead.  This project is 2 fold; it spices up the Jeep, but it also keeps me entertained while I program this thing!  There's a guy who went all out and did an awesome Miata dash with an arduino, but I do not plan to go that far.

I have been poking around the FSM, and I see no reason not to do this; idea is to leave the speedo and tacho as they are, but take the signal from the instrument cluster and feed it to an Arduino.  Then take out the telltales, and replace that with an LCD screen.  This means speedo and tacho will work normally, but I will also have an LCD screen in the middle displaying icons for the regular telltales stuff (turn signals, seatbelts, e-brake, hi-beams, check engine, illumination) as well as some additions (compressor, lockers, fan setting, aux lights - all 3) and a digital tacho and speedo.  I can even set up different screens...  and even start everything up with a JEEP logo when ignition is started.

This is more or less what I have in mind:

If that works, I also intend to use an LCD (or OLED) for the 4WD indicator (which I have not used in at least 10 years, as I have a solid axle) and use it for something else (I could do anything really, but the first thing that comes to mind is a Voltmeter that actually works!  The analog one SUCKS!  Oh, and a clock!).  The idea for that will be to design it in a way that it uses the round design, so as to fit in with the rest of the Jeep.  I am going to start testing and will keep you guys updated if this works or not.  I need to figure out how to waterproof everything (apart from conformal silicone), but given the prices of these components, even if I end up damaging them, they are simple to replace.

Hi, guys.

I know it's been a while since I last posted here...  To be honest, I have not done any wheeling in the last 2 years (3 years?), but the Jeep is still with me.  Just recently got the Jeep dusted off and cleaned.  I also fixed a long list of stuff that needed fixing (still got a couple of items to check off the list!), did some regular maintenance (oil changes and such), and upgraded a couple of things (like the winch line, which is now synthetic, and the Hawse fairlead).

I just started getting into Arduino with my son, and I am AMAZED at all the things you can do with it.  I also like that things are fairly cheap with Arduino!

As I got into the Jeep today to reconnect my ARB compressor and lockers, I looked at the Jeep, and, honestly, the thing that makes the Jeep look the most dated is the gauge cluster.  This got me thinking; what if I do a personalized cluster with Arduino and OLED screens?  I figured someone must have done something like this, but I could not find anything online.  Have you guys heard of anyone doing anything like this?

Is that a TJ tank?

Yeah, stock TJ tank from a 6 cylinder. found a guy on facebook marketplace selling one. Same tank just no vent tube.

I just bought a 19 gallon tank. Heard sticking your hand in the tank to cut the tube isn't bad though
