Steering Gearbox Replacement
« on: July 09, 2011, 02:40:29 PM »
When I purchased my 90 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L 5 Speed the steering gearbox had alot of play in it i.e: could turn the steering wheel a good quarter of a turn without moving the steering linkage. The steering shaft going into the gearbox was turning but obviously the insides are wore out enough that it wasn't moving the steering linkage. I backed off the lock nut on the adjustment screw on the top of the gearbox and turn the adjustment a good 1 to 1 1/2 turns and didn't tighten the steering up at all. So I ordered a remanufactured power steering gearbox. I removed the original gearbox and when I tried to thread the hose fittings back into the new gearbox the holes in the gearbox are about half as deep as the original so the threads aren't even close to starting. The casting numbers on the gearboxes are the same. The main difference between them is the depth of the fitting holes and the reman has a pilotshaft extension on the input shaft where the steering wheel linkage hooks to it. Has any one else run into this problem or have any ideas on what to do? I checked at a couple parts store for fitting adapters and even checked on getting a new pressure hose just to see if the fittings are different. Neither one of the fittings for pressure or return hoses will work.
