Auto Tranny
« on: March 29, 2012, 05:48:45 AM »
Hey guys my mother in-law has a 99 4.0 with an auto transmission. She's been complaining about the jeep lurching when put into reverse. I drove it the other day and it lurches really bad going from park to reverse eve churps the tires with your foot on the brake. Does anyone have any advice besides the service center? I was thinking the fluid might be either too low or too high the jeep is hardly driven since they don't get out much and it has about 105,000 miles on it as well. Thanks for any advice!!!

Definitely start by checking the fluid level. The owners manual should cover the procedure. I think you need to be on flat ground, idling in neutral with engine warm (dipstick has two levels on it, hot and cold...use the hot with before mentioned proceedure). Let us know what you find.

Ok i'll check it here shortly! Would it be a good idea to go ahead and have the service done even after the findings? I called a service center here in town and they said full flush filter and fluid change would be anywhere from 120-180 depending on synthetic or not?

x2 a high idle comes to mind as a cause.

Ya idle does seem a bit high but it only does it in reverse i tried every combination and the only one affected is park to reverse everything else is normal!!

the reason i asked about going from reverse to drive was thinking if the rear ring and pinion would have excessive backlash (and in combination with a high idle might give you that effect), otherwise i don't know much about autos.

Im a believer in doing the tranny flush. It's probably the most neglected maintanence item and its relatively cheap and can have expensive consequences. Go with what jeep recommends for fluid...they do extensive testing and these auto trannys are like big hydraulic pumps so fluid is everything.

Thanks for all the advice guys i reluctantly took it down to get flushed and filtered and they found decent sized shavings in the pan. Needless to say the tranny was pulled last night to be thoroughly inspected. Hopefully t's nothing crazy the trans guy quoted a complete rebuild for 1255.00 w/12month/12k mile warranty not too bad but then again like i said before it's my mother in laws jeep so i'm not footing the bill. After all this is said and done though i will be taking my jeep to be flushed and filtered.
