I believe the Passat starter is used because the torque required to spin the TDI is pretty high. Higher than the stock YJ unit is gogin to be happy with. The PAssat starter is also a common unit on the VW side of the fence... Its the highest torque of the VW units.. NEar as I can find...YMMVDave
so if the Passat starter is the same tooth count for jeep 5spd, would it be the same for a 3spd auto? If yes, then i could just use the Passat starter.
i don't think they had 2 different starters on the 2.5L, i'll check rock-auto and see what it lists for the 2 transmissions.EDIT: all the starters listed for the 2.5L have no mention of manual or auto transmission, so it would be fair to assume it is the same - now i can't tell you for sure but it is unlikely that they had a different one for the auto. You'll have to check to make sure though.
