Engine Identification, 1997 2.5
« on: July 16, 2012, 06:08:35 AM »
Curious,
Does the Jeep stamp any engine identification on to the block?   If so, what will it tell me and where can I find it?   My engine noise revealed it's self last week, by tossing the connecting rod through the side of the block.   Had to get it to a engine shop in Northern MI.   300 plus miles from home.   The hole in the block is about 3 to 4 inches up from the oil pan in direct line of number 3 piston.  MY kid was driving it at the time... guess it made NO noise... nothing.... I will never know.

yes, it is on the passenger side of the block about where the cyl 4 is. It contains the date of manufacturing, first digit is the year (for you should be 6 or 7 for 96 or 97), then the month, after that there are 2 letters for the engine type and 2 more digits for the day of manufacturing. There is another place for a 2 letter code to the left of the distributor which gives you an indication if oversized pistons and cam bearing bores or undersized bearings were used, if it's missing then there are all standard size (P is for piston connecting rods, M for main jurnal, B for cylinder bore and C for Cam bearing bores).
