Topic: Squeaker in the TJ passenger seat

I give up...

The passenger seat in my TJ squeaks when going over bumps. Not just a little bit but a lot of squeak. Its loud enough to be heard and annoying over M/T's at 55mph and the radio on full blast.

I've sprayed every joint with lubes galore (JB80, WD40, Lithium grease, Marvels Mystery Oil), and it just makes the cab stink and the squeak does not stop. The only way to stop it is to push on the seat back with your elbow, put alot of weight on the seat (20lbs plus, or have a passenger)  or to fold the seat forward.

If anyone knows where this noisy little bugger lives, please let me know. Wherever it is, its not obvious...

i have a YJ and did have the same issue, now i don't know if this applies to you but i'll throw it out there anyway: i had a crack in the floor around the nut and every time i would go over a bump it would squeak, put a bead of weld over it and became silent. i have no idea how it cracked since my tub is pretty good especially on the passenger side. Since you have a TJ all that is different but if you're out of ideas might be worth a shot to check it, maybe even look at the bolts that tighten the rails to the floor to make sure they're not loose.

I'll remove the seat to see if there is a crack..

The Jeep DOES have a body mount rusted off right about there. It looks like it crushed the tub in that place, which cracked the paint and caused it to rust up. By now, its hanging out in the air nothing holding on. I imagine it weakens the tub in that area.

Its the most worrysome spot of rust on the whole vehicle, the weakness could very well have prompted a crack to form.

could be the joints in the tug squeaking since there's no support, i'd say get it welded back or make another support out of square tubing or U channel.

Good luck in finding it. Mine has been doing that for a long time. I swing it forward like to gain access into the back. It stays quiet that way. You could put some weight on the seat. I find it easier to keep the seat forward.

Found it. There are two torx shoulder bolts and two plastic washers that make up the access slider mechanism. The plastic washer wears out of specification from use and allows side to side and some metal to metal contact. Replace the washers squeak/rattle goes away... In theory. Have to find some plastic washers that will work..

good, i can imagine how annoying that can be. In mine i have a squeak that i don't know what it is somewhere under the dash or from the engine compartment, it does it for a little bit and then stops - completely drives me nuts, if i know what's doing it i can cope better with it. Glad you found it.

And we have success. The hardware store had some perfect (well, for the most part, they are extremely close...) nylon washers that drop in there in place of the old black ones. I stacked two washers on one side and it has solved the problem for now, will need to pull the seat to do the other side for a complete fix.

I have seen some of these sliders have a channel type of bushing that has tabs and goes down in the track to keep metal to metal from happening. I don't see why this wouldn't work for fixing that style of slider bushing as well.
