Passenger Seat Action
« on: July 01, 2014, 11:01:31 PM »
Gentlemen, when a person in the back seat of my '98 TJ wants to get out, they are supposed to be able to lift the little lever that allows the back of the front seat to go forward and when that happens the seat itself goes forward and up at the end of travel. It stopped working like that a couple weeks ago.
1) The little lever on the back of the seat still works.
2) The bar in front of the seat still works, allowing the seat to travel forward.
3) The thumb lever under the front of the seat works(next to the runner), allowing the seat to travel forward and up.
But all that should be able to be triggered by the little lever on the back of the seat.
I used a VERY bright light with a mirror, (I'm a big guy) and can't see where anything is disconnected or broke.
Any ideas?
Thanks.  Hunter

Comon people. There's too many people on here not to have somebody know something.

Try putting some penetrating oil (e.g., PB Blaster) on the hinge joints.  Could just be rusted or gummed up.  Don't want you to miss out on any passenger seat action...

Sir, you are sick. You must drive a Jeep.   :naughty:
Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a shot this weekend.

This has happened to both of the seats on my wife's '98 TJ. When we first bought it I lectured everyone NOT to use the little pull straps to pull on the seat, just to release the mechanism that allows the seat to flop forward. Of course no one listened and so we now have two broken cables under the seats. Flop the seat forward and look underneath you;ll find a small gauge cable attached to a lever. Give the inner wire a gentle pull if you get no resistance then your cables are broken and need to be replaced. I've heard that this is some major fun so I have not tackled it yet. Hey they broke the cables, they can deal with getting in the back seat. I hope this helps.
