Electrical Woes....
« on: May 06, 2006, 01:24:47 PM »
Just when everything was going fine you just know something is gonna go wrong.  So anyways hop in the jeep this morning   starts up fine  i take off and about 3 blocks away i notice the check guages light is on and then i noticed that the voltage guage is floored past 19.  so i pull over turn off the jeep   i look for something under the hood but couldnt really find anything.  Then the jeep wouldnt start  no electricity wont turn on anything but the dome light.  crap

So a buddy come and jump starts the jeep and we pay attention to everything that is going on and all is fine.  i go on my merry way.  Another 3 blocks and wammo the guage floors it again but i kept going for a couple blocks to see what would happen.  It drove fine like nothing was wrong but once again after i shut it off there is no juice in the battery.

Anyways in conclusion i took the alternator off and cleaned it and brought it to checker to check it and its fine so now im stumped.     Anyone plz got some ideas??????????????

If you have a multimeter, check your battery voltage with the Jeep off, should be 12ish.  Start the Jeep and it should hang out around 14ish.  When you see it spike to 19, verify that as well.  Your alternator does not have a built in regulator, its in the computer I believe but it is one of those things that rarely fails.  That is what seems to be failing.  Typically, your battery is going to get destroyed from this so set aside a little for that as well.  Good luck and hopefully someone else will have a better idea!
