i have an 86 2.5l xj, auto trans, msd ignition and coil. the thing has been running good until yesterday. it rained hard the night before, when i went to start it, there was nothing. 3 months ago the same thing happened to me and took the starter out and had it bench tested, it was bad, so i replaced it with a quality duralast starter
. the jeep has a push button to start it. im getting 12v at the switch and starter. the switch opens and closes like it should, jumped the starter (ol screwdriver deal) and it spins, but doesn't engage gear with flywheel? was wondering if this push button bypasses the ignition switch or if/when the ignition switch goes bad could this affect my set up with the button, not sure how the button thing really works, the button was there when i bought it, button has 2 wires on it and seems to be connected to 12v supply via the fuse box and other end to little tab on starter silinoid. don't think it does bypass because i need to turn the key forward then push button for the engine to start, if key isnt in, the motor just turns, or did till yesterday. just wondering if the switch in the column went out on me? not sure if the msd would have anything to do with it? im getting voltage at positive terminal on coil. ive tried to look at other posts just couldn't find one that seem to help. just seein what you all thought, any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks in advance.
