D30 Disconnect Elimination Issues?
« on: November 08, 2006, 09:41:28 AM »
I am thinking about getting some chromo shafts for my YJ D30.
Since the passenger side will be one piece and eliminate the factory disconnect, will this cause any steering or flat tow issues since I have a locker in the front??

A few times I have accidentaly started to flat tow while in 4WH and the front tires wouldn't turn.  Was wondering if the same thing would happen once I had once piece axles and no way to unlock the hubs.

I have TJ shafts and a Lockright in my YJ, and I don't notice any wierd handling issues when driving it.

I once flat towed my rig w/ the disconnect eliminated, but no locker in the front.  I didn't notice anything then, but again, no locker so it's not the same.

The best way to flat tow (I never did it, but it makes perfect sense) is to disconnect the driveshafts from the pinions and strap them up out of the way.  Then you have absolutely zero chance of causing damage to anything other than the axles, which shouldn't be damaged by flat towing anyway.  If it's an auto locker (like a lockright or detroit) then it should allow the wheels to spin at different speeds because no torque is being applied.

Since you are wanting to go with special axle shafts thus eliminating the 2-pce inner axle, just make sure you have the trans in gear (manual) or park (auto) and the tcase in neutral. I believe that is how its suppose to be flat towed.
Locker only engages when its driven by input from the ds.

With the rear ds attached to the tcase, the pump will be engaged and you won't burn up your tcase. Tranny output is held still for being in gear or park, and the tcase in neutral. There may be some hydraulic static pressure wanting to rotate the trans output shaft/taces input shaft, but it won't move due to tranny in gear/park.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

So what would explain why when I had my xfer case in 4 Hi and tried to flat tow, the steering would stay straight and the front tires would screach when I tried to turn a corner?  Still no power or simulated power input from the xfer case right??
I always just assumed since the disconnect was engaged the locker prevented both wheels from moving at different rates.

Any info is much appreciated.  Thanks.

Many different things could attribute to screeching tires. This is way after the affect, but I'd be more worried about the tcase and trans if you pulled the Jeep in gear. If the trans was in gear also (being a manual), any rotation of the tires translates to rotation of the engine since it was all tied mechanically, ie trying to pull start when dead. An auto trans is a little different but pulling still generates engine rotation....

Only thing I can think of low tire pressure from trailriding and/or the mechanical ink between front and rear axle locked through tcase and the driveshafts and/or lastly, you left the key out and locked the steering column.

Whenever you flat tow a vehicle, the tires will follow the road, just like when you drive, you let go of the steering wheel. You do have to keep the key in the ignition, but there should be a point before Run in the switch where you don't provide ignition. Run provides ignition and when rotating the engine, it will start.
