TJ Gas Tank
« on: December 05, 2007, 08:14:03 AM »
Well, I've been looking for a gas tank for my jeep for about a week. I found a few that were used that were $100+. I finally found one that is about 2hr and 33 minutes away from me and the guy only wants $25. The only difference is, it's out of a 1997 and is a 15 gallon instead of a 19 which came with my jeep. How big of a deal is this? Does anyone with a 15 gallon wish they had more fuel storage, and also isn't there an easy 15-19/20 gallon conversion for this problem?

Easy fix...my 99 came with a 15 gal tank.  The nifty little secret is that they are exactly the same size tank.  The 15 gal tank just has and extended vent tube that extends into the tank keeping it from filling to 19 gal.  I dropped the tank and used PVC cutters to cut off the tube as high as possible.  Now, its a 19 gal tank.

I still have the 15 gal sending unit, so it just stays on full much longer than it did.  Once the needle begins to move, its accurate.  Ill see if I can find the link for ya..

Heres one link, but not the one I was looking for.  Theres only one thing wrong with this write-up and that is DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT CUT THE FILLER TUBE!!  It does nothing for the capacity.  Leave the filler tube with the anti-syphon ball and just cut the vent tube as high up as you can.  It looks like a "hose" in the pic, but its actually like a 3/4" black plastic tube.

Heres a pic inside of a YJ tank showing filler tube with anti-syphon ball on left and the totally unnecessary vent tube on the right.

Thanks alot. That just finalized my decision on who to buy from. It's suprising how the fuel system is just tricked into thinking the tank is full before it is. Looks like this will be my christmas break project.
