question: help the mpg...msd or intake for a 2.5l?
« on: November 29, 2007, 08:18:21 AM »
i just got a 98tj about 2 weeks ago....broke down on me yesterday but thats another story for another day...rising gas prices were forcing me to look around for fuel economy options and i came across msd systems and cold air intakes (k&n or AEM) I was wondering which is the better bang for your buck, or are there other options out there...by the way, im running 32s with no lift (a little rubbing, but i plan to fix that with spacers) so I know that tire size doesnt help, but still, are there products out there I can purchase that will help the gas consumption a bit...right now though she's getting the best damn mpg she's ever had as she's currently broken down.

The main problem is your poor little 4 banger is way overgeared, you would be much better off sticking money into some 4.88 gears.  Or drop your current tire size down closer to stock size.  The cold air intake and other performance stuff are going to have a minimal effect compared to running the correct gearing for the engine's torque curve.

Yeah even with the TBS, E-fan, Airaid intake, and Dynomax Exhaust my jeep was having trouble pulling my 33's. Just got it geared to 4.88's and it really woke up nicely!! :thumb: Of course you have to pay though but you will save in the long run because you wont need all those bolt ons to get back your performance.
