Hey, my name is Giovanni, I'm new here and I have a 96 Cherokee manual 2 WD 2.5L and I want to lift it, 3" with some 31" tires... They told me my car wouldn't be able to handle a lift due to engine being small... Is that true?

Not totaly true, you could get around on stock gears and 31's but if you want stock performance i would consider re-gearing best thing we ever did for our 4 banger wrangler pulling 33's  8)

Oh sweet. Because my mechanic told me about the engine not being able to handle it and a lot of people told me to re-gear and ill be fine. My car is bone stock. What do you recommend for me to get?

You'll be able to turn the 31's but you probably will never see 5th gear again until you lower your r & p.  I'd say do for it!!

It would depend on the gears that are in your cherokee.  If they are 4:11's like mine were stock then you should be ok with 4:56's.  If you see bigger than 31's in your future or you have plans on adding more weight then 4:88's(which are as low as you can go with out swapping you axle assy)

Being a 2wd (if i'm reading your specs right) you might want to just try the bigger tires first and the if you find you don't have enough power consider the swap!  31" is not "that" big of a tire over stock!

I have a '94 2.5L YJ (and the engine has almos 120K miles) with stock gears (4.10) and 31" tires, and on flat ground, I still have 5th gear...  Unless driving against the wind, that is.  Anyway, 31s and 4.10 or 4.11 gears is doable.  For 33s you will need to regear for sure.

very jumpy and jerky to put it simply,  much more torque than you need.
