Shock travel issues
« on: February 26, 2008, 08:05:02 AM »
My front shocks are 17.42 collapsed and 30.46 extended.  At rest they are at 25.75.  This means that they allow only 4.71 inches of droop, I'm pretty sure they are limiting the droop.  They allow 8.33 inches of up travel but the distance between axle and bumpstop is only 7.5 inches, so some shock travel is being wasted.  This means that by lowering the upper shock mount or raising the lower mount, more droop will be available.  Up travel can them be limited with an extended bump stop or something similar.  A few questions:

1) Is anything available to lower the upper mount or raise the lower mount (about 1.5 inches) in a non-permanent way?

2) Are the bumpstops that go on the shock rod itself (like these http://www.quadratec.com/products/16021_10X_PG.htm) any good or is it clearly better to use axel or frame mounted bump stop extensions?

Thanks

Those bump stops look like they would be 100% garbage!  I've been looking at shock relocation abd there are all kinds of product out there check out the genright web sighthttp://www.genright.com/category.aspx?categoryID=113
Spendy but give you and idea.  Those are for coil over mounting but can be used for shocks too!

I don't know if they are still doing it, but ORO was using shock bumpstops with their airRoc stuff.   I really don't see an issue with using them.

Thanks for the replies.  I'll check out the genright stuff.  I have the impression that the shock bumpstops should probably be OK for slow speed bottomings which is about all my jeep will ever see ( I don't plan on jumping it or doing desert racing) but for high speed I'm not so sure they would protect the shock mounts enough.
