I meant to say waggy in my post. Sorry for the confusion. They work well.

Do you know if they are pretty much bolt in or will some mods have to be done to them?

There are some mods that will have to be done. I stayed spring under because I need/want a little more stability when I wheel. The long side perch will have to be moved. It is straight forward. The centering pin hole in the casting will have to be drilled out. IIRC, the waggy mounts were 1/4 or 1/2 wider than the YJ spring packs.

Is there a best year of 44s out of a waggy?

Its something like 80 or 81 to the last year of their production. I think the end was in the early 90's IIRC.

Sell the XJ D44 and stick with matching pair of axles.  The only downside to the EB 9" is that it's 28 spline but can be converted to 31 spline fairly easily.  All you'd need are some axles to be cut down from a F-series and the carrier.  The other down size is the low pinion although it's not that bad.

How much strength difference between the 28 and 31 spline?  I was thinking of trying to find a factory trac lock for the 9 and from what i read the trac lock for the 31 spline has been known to break.

Another option is a detroit locker.  Since the nascar guys at all levels tend to use the 9" rear, there are usually quite a few used detroits on ebay for around $200-$300

Talk about sorry luck.  I just got done pulling the diff cover off the Bronco 44 and it looks like the carrier housing has been cracked and welded.  Is it worth having it stripped to see how bad it is or should I just trash the housing?

I'd say it's junk.   You can weld Dana housings since they are cast steel, but you would really need an alignment bar to make sure that the carrier race surfaces and outter bearings were still aligned.

I'll go ahead and strip it and get it cleaned.  I got a line on shortened 44 from a fullsize ford.  I got 200$ bucks in the bronco axle and I hate to just throw it away.
