ECU Questions - Part Numbers and Waterproofing
« on: April 23, 2008, 10:01:57 AM »
OK, guys, I need your help in figuring out if this is worth keeping or not.

I got a ECU for a '95 YJ 2.5L with the Chrysler P/N 56028829 and I was wondering if it would work in my '94 YJ 2.5 (my computer part number is 56028289; WTF!).  According to what I have read, the '95 ECU should work in the '94, but I want to be sure.  If it works, I would keep the ECU (probably put it on the Jeep and send the current one to be rebuilt to be sure it is working like it is suppossed to), and then keep the one I got as a spare.

Also, another question would be what is the best way to protect the ECU from water damage while crossing rivers and such; I have a couple of friends that have busted their ECU's this way (which is why I got the other one in the first place!).

My ´95 with AX5 had part number 56028828.  I have read that others should work as long as they are from an AX5 Jeep.  You could just plug it in and see if it works...maybe wait for an expert to confirm nothing can get damaged.

Did your original computer fail recently?  Mine did near the end of last year.

Not yet, but given that the Jeep is 14 years old in June, I think it is just a matter of time...  I have replaced all the sensores (little by little) to be sure it's running fine (I kept them all as back up parts for trail fixes later on down the road), and I wanted to get the ECU up to par before it bites the dust...  Plus, the one I bought I got for $20 off eBay, so it was a good deal (I thought of it as a $20 insurance policy!).  I am thinking about runing the new ECU to see if it will work, but (1) was afraid it could damage something, and (2) taking the ECU out looks like a PITA...

Wow, sounds like you are doing a true restoration!  I´ve just been replacing things as they fail or seem too worn out.  Having a spare ECU would be good though...mine failed on a mountain top trail, had to be towed out.  Then it magically started working again for a few more months before it died for good.

Taking the ECU out is pretty easy.  Just remove the wiper fluid reservoir (one screw and then just slide it out).  Then just one small bolt for the ECU connector (disconnect battery first) and three screws to get the ECU out.

As far as I remember, it goes something like 92-93 and 94-95 are swappable years, I have been slowly researching this for my future MPI swap... But my knowledge is only focused on 92-93 for now (because those were the two years available to me).
