Do you think I could do it?
« on: September 02, 2008, 01:03:29 PM »
The springs on my Jeep are getting really worn and tired.  I would like to run 33s in the near future.  My current set up is 1.5" shackle lift with a 1" body lift on stock springs and I can run my 31s pretty good with a decent amount of room to flex them.  Do you think I could run this same set up but with some 2" BDS springs and have room for some 33s?  I plan to add TJ flares later on which I know won't get me that much more clearance but hopefully a little more.
A little current pictures..

2" more lift should be fine since a 33 is only going to be 1.5" closer to the fender.

Swap the stock rear springs to a spring over axle up front with the stock shackles and get new 4" lift springs (keeping under axle) with the longer shackles in the rear. Remove the track bars front and rear (if you haven't already). Add quick disconnect for the front sway bar. You can still add the TJ flares but if you are going to the TJ flares, might as well get the wider Rubicon flares. They will cover more tire width.

This will keep you from using the longer shackles up front as push bars. It will give you the lift you want for larger tires. It will give you a better ride and a much better approach angle. Check out JJ's Jeep mods as he has done this on his YJ.

4" lift will get you room for 33's easy.

So, you have 1" body lift and 1.5" shackles.  if you add a 2" bds to it, that will be 4.5" total.  bring on the 33's.

You can use the 33" tires by adding only the TJ flares, you would be surprised how much they open the fenders.  But a 2" spring kit would work also.

Personally, I'd go with a 4" kit and get away from longer shackles.  But 2" and TJ flares would probably give a better ride and flex better.

OK I have a Question On the TJ flares on a Yj. DO you cut the sheet metal to get the tire clearance with this Mod?
