Potential gas tank swap
« on: January 11, 2009, 10:33:11 AM »
Have any of you replaced the 15 gal. gas tank in an early YJ with the 20 gal. tank from a later one?  My '89 Wrangler is having fuel pump problems- like, it quit working after nine months.  So I have this plastic tank from a '93.  I'll need a fuel pump for an '89, but will I need a new sending unit?    Is it worth the hassle to get an extra five gallons capacity?   (It may be worth the hassle just to be able to say "I did it!")  By the way, I also have the after market skid plate for the 20 gal. tank.  Comments? :puzzled:

It would require a '91+ skidplate as well, not sure on the compatibility of the sending units, never compared them.

Everything, as long as you have the later skid plate (which you said you do), should connect right up. The PO's replaced the tank/pump in my 86 XJ with a 93 one, no problems whatsoever (at least there).

I think he was asking / wondering if the old tbi pump would fit / work in the new tank.... or if the mpi pump would work with the tbi system (mpi uses higher fuel pressure but the tbi has a fuel pressure regulator (as does the mpi) so it could be a mute point.)

The MPI pump was still in the 93 tank, and I had the TBI system, hook right up no problems. It all depends on the FPR.

Thanks for he quick replies!  I'm going to do this after it warms up a bit.  I gave it some more thought and decided I was overlooking the obvious- the fuel pump relay.  Swapped relays and the FP kicks on when the key is turned, and she fired right up.  I had an extra relay and plugged it in so the latch relay would work, and I'm set.

Fuel tank swap: I'll use the correct fuel pump- I read somewhere that it's not wise to try to push to much fuel thru the TBI pressure regulator.  I don't remember all the reasons, but it does make sense.  If the gauge sender isn't compatible with the '89 gauge, I'll have to see about adapting the old sender- maybe lengthen the arm as needed.   I really don't see that much of a problem; I just don't want to overlook the obvious (I have the tendecy to do that).

Thanks!

Mine would stay above half full for the longest time, but once it got past there it would go real quick. I'm not sure what would fix this at all... haha, it wont matter much soon (for me).
