Converting a '86 AMC Comanche from 4x2 to 4x4

I'm converting a '86 AMC Comanche 4x2 to 4x4 for stage 1, stage 2 will be a turbo setup on the little 2.5L after a rebuild and new pistons. Also considering options for chopping down the bed. Its 7.5ft long with about 2ft over hang from the rear wheels... NO GOOD. Any idea or tips before I get to whippin' out the trusty saws all? or other ideas in general?

Wish I could help more, sounds like a good plan!

Planning on using an early model np231, or a 207? Some things to consider: spline count, year, and cable speedo adapter.

86 will more than likely need a 207 for a direct, easy swap. 231 you'll need from 87 to 90, behind anything but the ax-15, but with it you'll need the correct speedo cable and possibly a new gauge cluster.

This is, of course, neglecting full-time cases, but I can't really help you there.

Just about your only choice on front axle is a dana 30, unless you want to find a rubicon LP44, which is only marginally stronger. Avoid the disco dana 30, or anything from a TJ and you'll be fine.

Oh, and if you're gonna turbo it anyways, you should consider an ax-15 or nv3550/np231 swap. Search on those, I don't have all the necessary information. I do know you'll need an 87-90 cable adapter, cable, and cluster (again).

someone chime in if I'm spewing crap... I'm just trying to lend any information I can!
