Thinner Seats?
« on: April 24, 2009, 07:42:24 PM »
Anyone know of any way to gain more space between the steering wheel and the seat. I have a '95 YJ with the tilt wheel and I fit but some more space would be nice. My wife has a '99 TJ without a tilt wheel. How difficult is it to install one.  My first thought is a thinner seat. I need all the legroom I can get. I am over 6'3" and have large legs from years of running and weightlifting. However I need a seat with decent support and at least some cushion as my back is pretty bad after a recent all expense paid vacation to the Middle East.
I am open to any ideas. I am interested in the front bench seats some guys have posted about, but I don't need one now. I do need to keep my back seat.

1. Smaller steering wheel
2. Cutting the seat mounts and lowering them. (requires welding)

From what I understand the steering colum should swap right over from another TJ.

Thanks, I have been thinking about going with a smaller steering wheel I need to find one. I had considered cutting the frame legs, but I don't want to loose to much leg room. I know I cat get everything after all it is a Jeep. Thanks for the TJ info also. I will start looking for a new column

Buy some corbeau YJ seat mounts.  They are supposedly 2" lower than the stock ones to accomidate aftermarket seats.

I would go with a different steering wheel first. Grant is probably the first choice for those that want to change. My GT measures 14".

Misch4x4 Products has the big boy brackets which basically sets the seats back. I see they don't have anything for the YJ, but do for the TJ. Think you can trade even across with your wife? LOL.

Anyways, they may be able to help.
