irratic volt guage

hello everyone i have an 86 xj 2.5 auto and after i upgraded my wiring to 00 welding cable, my oem voltage meter would rise and lower from 14 to 12 and back and fourth. at this time i had the 94 amp oem alternator in. after putting in a 140 amp alternator, it is around 13 driving and drop to around 9 or so when idling. it seems the fluctuation got worse. i haven't noticed my lights or anything dimming when its that low, which i would suspect it would, just wondering if any one has had any issues like this when they upgraded their wiring and alternator? and if this is a common problem? and if any one knew where the oem volt gauge wiring is ran to, couldn't find in Haynes or Chilton? i also thought that my drive belt is too loose, which it is compared to spec, but alt is all the way back on the bracket, cant get anytighter, i took out my ac compressor and a buddy of mine got me a belt for it a few yrs ago that would fit because the factory serp belts for non ac is too long, but dont know from which vehicle he got it from, does anyone have any suggestions as to what motor has a 6 groove  belt i might use thats a couple inches shorter than factory xj non ac belt is? sorry for so many questions, just couldnt find anything out from previous posts or elsewhere, thanks in advance.
