Alternator upgrade questions
« on: January 04, 2011, 11:38:14 AM »
Hello All,
First time posting on this site, I'll get to filling out my profile in a moment but for now I thought I'd get right to the question that brought me here:
I want to upgrade my alternator to run speakers, the KC lights I got for xmas, taurus fan and hopefully one day a winch. I was looking at the CS144 but the general opinion was that it seems to put a little too much load on the engine, so something smaller would probably be better for my little four banger.... So I'm looking at cs130s, which powermaster has rated up to 140 amps.
I haven't really been able to find a concise answer about clocking, and how it works and if it will always be needed, and I also am told that my charging system is regulated by the ECU so I need to do something with a resistor added to the wiring harness... and I have no idea what "self exciting" means... or if I need a single or dual bridge rectifier (or what those do...) and because of my lack of knowledge on these issues I am unable to figure out which donor vehicles I need to be looking for.
SO.... I've been doing a ton of searching on here and jeepforum and pretty much still have no idea what I need to do to, and which alternator I should go for with what specs and what components without it bogging down my little engine too much and so on.
So, PLEASE, for the love of whatever, can somebody help educate me so my headlights will stop flickering?
Thanks!

it's in the FAQ - i used a GC 136 amp alternator (p/n ends in 1693AC but there are about 10 of them that have the same output), it's a direct bolt-on (very little modification).

this thread lists all the options http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php/topic,400.0.html

remember we are talking tbi jeep. so its the delco-remy style alternator. which im pretty sure aren't controlled by the computer as they are the same style we usein our willys which don't have a computer.  i hope someone can answer the rest of your questions as ive been wanting to upgrade to an alternator with around 100 amps but haven't gotten one yet..  the link sharpxmen gave will still apply but you need to look at the second half of it where it says 87-90 as you probably already figured out.

edit: confirmed it has internal regulator so no pcm control.

Oh I guess I need to look a little harder through the FAQs. One of the posts that was linked on there suggested a custom rebuilt 12si that's beefed up a bit, so I scrolled through ebay and came across this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130240695052#ht_1668wt_1165
Is this one of those things on ebay that is probably too good to be true or is it actually worth giving a shot?
