85 2.5 carb'd, stalls above 1/2 throttle
« on: July 17, 2009, 08:30:17 AM »
The 2.5 stalls out and then has very little power after it catches up, the vacuum is so strong it sticks the throttle wide open, New carter yfa 1bbl, new dist cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, new fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel hoses, dropped and cleaned out fuel tank. Top speed is 50-55 mph. vacuum hoses and emission recirculation hoses were pretty much missing. My guess is some problem with the spark advance. I think it is MCU controlled. There is a vac line to the distributor but I may have connected it to wrong port on the carb.
Any suggestions as to what to try next would be appreciated...

disconnect that vacuum line you are not sure about and see if there is an improvement.

no "vacuum" should be stronger than the return spring on the throttle body - you might be missing a return spring but that would not be your stall or lack of power problem. It could be the spark advance or some fuel delivery issue (either too little or too much) - do you get any backfire in the exaust or intake (sorry, not sure what you call when you get the flame coming out thru the throttle body).

as i said before i got it running by renewing, cleaning or replacing fuel delivery tank to carb. I disconnected the dist to ecu wires this afternoon. engine would not start. cleaned connections reconnected starts good runs good up to half open throttle then stall and misses. I'll try the disconnect vacuum line. how could i check to see if the fuel delivery is ok? thanks

sorry i missed your questions. No backfire in intake or exhaust.  I did blow the cat converter off and blew out the muffler having to shut off the key because of the stuck throttle, cutting it on and off to get to a safe pull off.
It runs better (no back pressure) but way to much noise.

did you look in the carb? a simple check youd be to step on the accelerator progressively and when it starts to "die" cutoff the ignition but keep the pedal at the same level - after it stops take the top off the carb and see if you have enough fuel level in there - compare with the level when you just let it idle. if you didn't clean the carb yet but the tank had crap in it when you cleaned it it could be that there's debris in the carb - take the top off and check and if it's dirt in there where the fuel is then take the whole thing out and clean it. could also be that the floater is busted but in that case would stall at idle too as it would flood.
