TJ Gauge Cluster

I have a 98 TJ SE with the 2.5 and recently the gauge cluster quit working. The check engine light still works and so does the low fuel warning light but nothing else works including the odometer. This happened after I installed a a head unit. I noticed a broken ground wire but I could not find where it was originally grounded to and found another place to gound it to but it did not fix the gauge cluster. Any help would be much appreciated.

what's a head unit? the PCM you mean? if that's the case could be a different year and from what i know they might not work together - but the TJ guys should chirp in here, i have a YJ.

didn't cross my mind

if that's the case it's a wire (ground or power) or a fuse, or if by some reason a connector came out of it's place

On the TJs the first two places to check if the guages and or whole cluster go dead is the connections on the back of the cluster and the three connectors that go on to the computer mounted on the firewall outside.  This is a re-occuring problem with the wifes TJ.  Electrial contact cleaner and then die-electric grease should fix it.  You can do a search to find a good how-to on taking the dash apart, its very easy.  Make sure that you disconnect the battery ground lead on your battery before you mess with the dash wiring.  You will be inches from the airbag.  Wait about 10 min for the cap to bleed off before you start after un-hooking the battery.
