rear diff getting pretty hot
« on: August 11, 2010, 09:36:44 AM »
I noticed this by accident when underneath dicking with other stuff.
On my 20mi route to work i noticed my rear diff gets pretty hot. About 120degF or so. Almost hot enough you cant keep your hand on it.
Its plum full of fluid.

Is this normal?

120º isn't bad, too hot to touch is bad.

Ok. Makes sense. I was curious since the front was cool to touch. But then realized, the front wasnt under load.  :brick: doh.
Thanks.

The rear will be WAY hotter than the front because there's no input torque on the front diff. Its not really doing much work.

Its normal for the rear to be quite hot. You should be able to touch without getting a first degree burn, but its normal for it to be so hot you cannot stand to hold your hand on it for more than a second or two after a drive.
