The Ford 8.8 is a good option for the rear but then you're kinda stuck with the lightweight d30 front axle for the lug pattern.

Consider a rear D44 from a mid '90s Isuzu Rodeo or Honda Passport, coupled with a Wagoneer front D44.  You gain large disc brakes at all 4 corners and a matching 6-lug wheel pattern that is very common among GM and imports.  I run this setup in my YJ and I've got another pair I'm preparing to install in my MJ. http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/drivetrain/axletech/154_0705_used_jeep_dana_44_axles/index.html

 Now I have another question. I'm trying to sup up my trusty 4 banger and was just curious on what some of you guys here did and the results. As we speak I'm starting small and putting in a new dist cap, with Bosch platinum plugs and 7mm plug wires. I'm looking at new ignition coils right now and am looking at a Pertronix epoxy filled coil.http://www.quadratec.com/products/17612_1101.htm 

 

I was looking at these coils as well. They are supposed to allow for larger spark plug gaps right? If so, what should the gap of the spark plugs be set at, does anyone know? Thanks!

If you have a few thousand dollars you could rebuild, spercharger or turbo. Gears will help the power get to the wheels, but that has nothing to do with getting more power out of the engine.

Most of these can be done rather inexpensively with parts sourced from the junkyard.

After some research, this is what I came up with;

- Electric fan (Taurus)

- Cold air intake (XJ/TJ 4.0 tube and a cone filter)

- 4.0 Throttle body (XJ/TJ 4.0)

- 1 inch TB spacer (can be made from aluminum and a hole saw)

- headers

- 2.25 exhaust tube and high flow muffler/cat

- inertia ring
