Transmission Replacement
« on: September 28, 2010, 07:42:05 AM »
I have a 98TJ and I was wondering what Vehicle's would be able to provide me with a donor auto transmission? My auto is slipping primarily off the start and sometimes takes a little time and high revving to get into gear. I want to replace it but I am not sure if the earlier YJ wranglers used the same transmission or not. I have found a transmission from a 93 and a 95 locally for good prices but I want to make sure I won't have too many issues before I buy one of them. Any information you guys have would be a great help!

95 Might go but can't confirm i always use 5speeds standards..  new would probably lean towards electronic shift and older yj's usually venture towards mechanical shift "aka cable shift" I'm assuming!!!

find out exactly what trans is in yours first. take some pictures and find casting numbers and go from there look for one the same cause anything different could end up requiring modifications to make work.  even my 5 speed I found out there was several to pic from depending on year and engine and what not.

according to Wikipedia there is a 3 speed auto and 4 speed auto in the tj

Beware of pulled trannys. Check and smell the fluid. Pull the tc off and look at that fluid. Trans may have been pulled for a reason the seller is not telling.

Just curious, have you checked the fluid level in your tranny?  Low fluid is one possible cause of slipping.

I have to check my fluids often because I have a leak somewhere near the transmission pan. I have replaced the gasket, used lucas additives, tried a couple other old school tricks all at different times of course but nothing has worked. If the fluid gets low the issues get much worse.

I'm pretty sure it's the internal clutches or something within the tranny. I want to buy a tranny from a junkyard Jeep and rebuild it before I install it into my Jeep. I found one I can pull from a 95 YJ and the engine has already been pulled so it's going to be an easy pull. It's only going to cost me $90 but I want to make sure it will work before I spend the time and money.

A transmission from a TJ model (97-02) would run about $750 and I would have to drive an hour or two minimum just to find one. I don't want to get into swapping an AW4 because it takes to many additional parts and I have heard as much negative about the swap as I have positive.

With all that said I just need to know if the YJ 30RH transmissions are the same as the TJ 30RH transmissions.

98-2001 according to Holander.  They list the 97 TJ as a 1 year only and then group the 94-95 as another group.

The differences are probabally minor and I would think that you could use a 94-95 trans, but there may be additional sensors on the newer ones.

At the end of the day,,, a carry in rebuild is not too bad, and you can have it modded to pull harder and slip less...

Just a thought..
