Relocating the power steering Resivoir??
« on: October 13, 2009, 08:06:38 PM »
I am going to do the electric fan install this weekend.
(It's a 98 TJ 4 cyl)
I have to relocate the power steering resivoir,
it's mounted to the plastic fan schroud.
I need longer hoses, it looks like both hoses
are just clamped on all 4 ends.
Can I just buy new hose and use hose clamps?
It looks like they are all low pressure????
What type of hose should I buy?
Thanks,
Vance

there's a special hose that is resistant to hydraulic fluid, most of the auto parts stores would sell it by the foot. you can use hose clamps for both hoses that come off the p/s reservoir - one is feed and one is return, no pressure there. the stock hose for these 2 is not steel braided, can't remember the sizes but again the auto-parts store would have it in their catalog.

Lifted the hood tonight and shut it back again when I saw the extra power steering tank.  I have the fan kit ready to go, but they made no provisions for this.   I way overpaid for the kit, wish I had found this place first  :brick:

I realize this is a year old, but did you get it going?  Any pics of where you put the power steering tank?

wish i could find the link, but i did that thing where the guy just cut the fan shroud down, leaving the mounts.  I did this thinking I would fix it later.  i have to say, it works pretty well.  i am very happy happy with it.  I'll move them later if i have to, but for now, they are solid.

oh, yeah..... i said i "overpaid" for the kit.  not sure if that is true.  the kit was great. i think what i was paying for was the instructions and the box with the wiring, so i did get something for my money.  it could be cheaper for sure, but i am please with the flex-a-lite kit.

been running this for a few months.

fan is crazy powerful.  make sure there are no small kittens sleeping on your bumper when it comes on.

i have it wired to come on even if key is off.  so after shut down, it comes on as engine temp rises.  not a big deal, but, it is so powerful that it cools the probe off very quickly and shuts off, then comes back on 3 to 5 min later.  probably would be better for it to just run for a few minutes on shutdown,  but def works this way.  just alot of starting current each time.

i think i lost my alternator.  gonna check it tomorrow, but pretty sure it is the problem.  not sure if this fan requires a bigger alternator, or it was just time for mine to go (99 TJ with 66k miles).  i can tell im becoming a jeeper.  im actually happy when it breaks.  now i get to do some tweeking and maybe buy something way bigger than i need :)

I put the PS pump from the 4.0 on my 2.5L TJ, and took a 4.0 pressure line to a hose shop and had them make it longer to fit the 2.5L.   Nice not having to mess with the plastic remote reservoir you can't buy anywhere when it breaks,  and it will.

outstanding.  i was looking at the 4.0 pump.  seems a much better/elegant soln.   i like the 'hose shop' tip too.  i'm afraid of messing with brake lines.  anybody else done 4.0 pump thing?

alternator was bad.  i have had plenty of time to think about it while waiting for new one.  i'm thinking that the fan should not cause the alternator to go out.  i would think that the battery sitting in the circuit should have no trouble supplying that much current.  of course i could have messed up the wiring too :)  ill have to double check it b4 i put in new alternator.
