Safety Recall #624
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:42:43 PM »
Fuel Tank Sending Unit Gasket  Recall # 625 and safety recall of 624.

Well I just got my tank dropped and this safety recall Had not been performed Supposed to be for 1987- early 94.  Was told mine was not an early 94.  But I also Have the early Axle U-joint on Mine. The Smaller ones.

This is a Parts Kit  C3906240 Has Sending unit Gasket
Sending unit Ring (This ring is almost twice as Thick as what I have on Mine now)
                                                    Screws

All that was needed was to drop the tank and replace gasket and ring with new screw.  Since My tank is already out Might as where do it.  Also my sending unit area was wet and dirt covered.  So I cleaned the whole area before I started.

Well I was wrong I had the New thicker ring.  But glad I pulled it as the Gasket was falling apart ready to start dropping pieces into the Fuels tank.  So Tank has been fixed got the rear of my tail Pipe bolted back to the frame like its supposed to.  Now all I have to do is convert to a 20 Gal tank and put it all back together.

I read a good write up on the 15 - 20 conversion. Just cutting off some of the extended vent hose really. But the guy did say you had to go with a 20 gal sending unit or risk running dry while sowing a half tank. Think I'll keep mine at 15, just be more depressing to see how much a 20 gal fill up will be. :'(

interesting that the recall is 87-94 since the tanks and sunders changed in 91 with the new fuel injection..

Write up is right on this site.

No worry about running dry at 1/2 tank It will just take a while for it to hit the full mark then it is normal after that.

From That link.

Quote
We could have bought a new twenty gallon sending unit but that would of added $219 to the project but we wanted to keep the cost down (i.e.., No cost.) With the fifteen gallon sending unit, the gauge read "F" until the first five gallon of gas had been used. After that the gauge worked as it normally did

While I'm in the area I'm adding the Helping hand.  Keeps the Licence plate open so its easier to fill it up.

This is bad info. The extra 5 gal capacity is at the top so the only change is your fuel gauge will read full for a lot longer, then operate as normal down to E.
