I believe the Passat starter is used because the torque required to spin the TDI is pretty high. Higher than the stock YJ unit is gogin to be happy with. The PAssat starter is also a common unit on the VW side of the fence...  Its the highest torque of the VW units.. NEar as I can find...

so if the Passat starter is the same tooth count for jeep 5spd, would it be the same for a 3spd auto? If yes, then i could just use the Passat starter.

i don't think they had 2 different starters on the 2.5L, i'll check rock-auto and see what it lists for the 2 transmissions.

EDIT: all the starters listed for the 2.5L have no mention of manual or auto transmission, so it would be fair to assume it is the same - now i can't tell you for sure but it is unlikely that they had a different one for the auto. You'll have to check to make sure though.

Seems like this will be possible. HPA sent me the tech drawings/specs of their adapter. Ill have time to check later and confirm with my local shop what kind of work is needed to make this work with the HPA kit.

As long as you get the flex plate mated to the crankshaft and the center pilot of the torque converter to slip into the back of the crankshaft without play you should be ok, you need to make a provision to activate the torque converter clutch also
