2.5 upgrades list!!!!
« on: September 17, 2012, 03:07:04 PM »
I've looked, and there are suggestions as to what would be the most important upgrades to the 2.5, but they are all over the place, and so many different opinions on the subject.  So.....coming from those that have done these upgrades, please list what you have done for engine performance, and tell us what the results were!!

4.0 Throttle Body + spacer - Helped at the mid-upper revs, I have a "test hill" on my commute. Seemed to help me stay in 5th better/longer before downshift. (Running stock filter box with side cover removed and the venturi.)

Thorley Tri-Y Headers, huge difference in pulling power, solidly kept me in fifth up the hill.

Rebuilt motor, B&B 4 cut valve job, Hesco RLVB/Clay Smith cam(Middle of the road timing.), Hyperutectic(SP?) pistons. Centerforce clutch.  What can I say it helped a bunch but its not a LS1... :)

Good Luck.

Dave

Banks cat-back exhaust, Airaid intake.  Acceleration is a little better, for sure it holds speed on the highway better.  Stock otherwise.  Will probably add the Banks header and a chip soon.

I have not been on here in awhile.  I think the two things that helped my engine the most before my rebuild were the bank header, and electric fan conversion. (I ended up doing the expensive conversion, with the flexlite fan).  I have also done the 4.0 Throttle body, and Dynomax exhaust. They helped a little but not as much as the header or fan.   It's not a Hemi, but it does OK on the interstate and most hills.
I toke a trip to Ocen City MD back in August and drove the jeep while my wife drove our Durango.  I think the biggest hurtle of these jeeps is the Aerodynamics.  I had my top down, and 4 bicycles on a carrior on the back, and it was everything that jeep could do to maintain 65MPH.  On the way back my soft top was on and the bike rack was on the Durango and the jeep was able to creep up to 80+  a few times and kept up with traffic.

94 YJ, 2.5(of Course) stock engine and trans.  2 " body lift and a Shackle lift.  19 Lb injectors.  Electric fan Conversion and somewhat cool air intake.  Headers with new Cat and muffler.

Think the fan was felt the most.  It does run better a freeway speeds now and gets up to speed much quicker.  But then I jump in my 2000 GMC with its 5.3 and the jeep seems like a turtle.

the 2 performance upgrades I did to my 2.5l was an electric fan and bigger tb. first got the fan and it freed up the engine to rev more responsive, then got the bored out tb a few years latter and it really livened it up could rev freely up to 5000 rpm (or more). the week before I traded it in  :'( I took off the electric fan, i was surprised the off idle and high rpm power changed (pull over 4k was down noticeably). idle seemed to be a hair lower adn needed slightly less throttle to start. bare in mind mine was a tbi 2.5l so the tb had a different amount of effect on the performance. either way they are booth good upgrades.

Yeah I forgot to mention the throttle body spacer also.  Made a little better response.  The biggest seat of the pants feel though was the E-fan.  I have thought about a different air intake as it still feels starved at low revs sometimes, and it revs much slower then my car.    I am not sold on them though.  I do have one on my charger, and it does have a bit better throttle response, however I think its biggest impact of "CAI's" is visual and sound more then anything else( looks neat , and sounds wicked at WOT.)  In reality I don't think there is a drastic difference in CFM of air moved into the engine though.

2000 TJ 4.11 diffs, 5 speed manual, 31 inch tire. A lot of dead weight in the bumpers and winch. Bumpers are solid steel. About two years ago I started with electric fan, throttle body spacer and air intake. Saw very little improvement. Had 132,000 miles on original motor, decided to have it rebuilt about a year later. The heads were decked, bored to .60 over, mid range cam, lower thermostat temp, headers, and 4.0 throttle body. Saw a good Improvement. Been trail riding numerous times since with great results. Around town no complaints. On the interstate no complaints most the time. Only issue is when the outside temp is above 95. Loose a little power due to air temp. Can maintain 80 on interstate with no problems. Gas mileage is about the same. Average 17-18 MPG. Total cost for these mods was about 5000. It was worth the money, would do it again.

You should toss up your Cam specs and manufacture from the rebuild.

I just installed the flexalite 485 on my Jeep last weekend  :fya:, in the process of setting the fan, and adjusting a wire (sent power to battery instead of key on :rage:, oops).
