The trick that has worked for me when the door won't open from the inside is to put pressure on the lock/unlock toggle on the unlock side and at the same time pull on the lever.  When it has to be too often, then it's time to lube the mechanism.

If it happens again, it has worked for me several times to try and open the door and smack the door with my hand near the latch. I need to lube my stuff up. Just got my jeep back out of my shop after it sitting for 2 years and this was the first thing I had to do!

I even hit it with a large rubber mallet.
